12v Auxiliary Socket
I need to fit a 12v socket for car charger type plug ins..
What's best and how/where to fit and wire? Any lessons learnt would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks |

If only.......
You'd mentioned it a week or so back! Could have made your loom capable of supporting this option...... Others have used car 12v aux sockets (fag light), I preffer the 16A DIN sockets - they fit nicely into the small area on the side panels, and are a little more robust. I have a 16A din to 4-way 12v aux outlet, so I can connect various chragers (phone/netbook/camera etc) if I need/want to. Or, you could go simple, and connect a 12v aux socket directly to the battery (I have this as an option too for the rear carrier). Where & how kinda depends on what you want to run from it (and remembering in the future not to plug the tent heater into it if it's only designed to support a few milli-amps!)

Oh ******!
Only just thought of it. I'll need to charge my phone, lap top etc and maybe run an air compressor for tyre changes.. Not sure how may milliamps these are, but I'll not be going silly with it. I still have your loom on my desk, as I'm waiting for my light brackets to be finished. I like the sound of the 16 din to 4 way 12v. What's best - another loom with the power socket on it too? Perhaps makes more sense.. Happy to fund the upcharge.. Cheers |

With what you have, you could run a charger socket from it, but it would only work when the lights were on!
Another circuit for the 12v charger is better, and you have the option to run GPS/grips/heated clothing etc, leaving the 12v socket for ad-hoc stuff such as phone/netbook/ipod/camera etc. I supplied Keithblade with one of these a few months back, it looks the same as what you have for the lights, but the relay isn't sealed-in and it goes into the side panel. The 16A DIN connectors are available on ebay ( 16A DIN Socket Link) and come with plug and socket, you then need to purchase a 2/3/4 way fag light type outlet ( 2v Cigar lighter Link), make your cable long enough and you can put it in a bar bag / tank bag / tail pack. I use a curly cable and it can do all three, I also have a short single 12 v fag light extension that goes in my bar bag, to keep my power hungry Andriod phone topped up on rides.

Presume I can go straight to socket with an in line fuse and don't need the relay?

I fitter a 12v waterproof (has a cap at least) socket from ebay. Cheap and prob only 15 mins to install. 3M Self adhesive backing makes it easy to position and the inline fuse gives peace of mind. Too easy.
