Rear wheel: 17" vs. 18"

Hi folks!

I'm planning to get a new rear wheel. The stock one has a bad bump in it and it's already quite rusty. So I'm gonna contact Thorsten from OTR and see what the costs are for a new Excel rim and Talon hub.
But I'm still not sure if I should get the 18" or stick to the 17" one. I'm not a rally driver, just a on- and offroad traveller. Any ideas?

Cheers, Mike

18 will throw out your speedo and increase gearing. But will enable you fit Enduro rubber . I thought about it for a while.

I just found out, that the 18 inch rim is about 13mm higher than the 17". Automatically there is some addition with the tyres, so the bike would be about 2cm higher after all. Hmm. I guess, I'll stay with the 17 inch type of wheel.

Go with the 18 height can be adjusted with a custom set of dog bones 25.00, gearing with a one tooth smaller front sprocket 15, once youve got an 18" rear wheel you can buy some serious offroad rubber, thats if you do a lot of offroading if not stick with the 17 it will be cheaper thats for sure, ive got a place that will lace up a 18" rim with stainless steel spokes into the original hub for 350, not cheap but an option

Dont forget that whatever you choose with tyre size or if you change the gearing, or just general speedo calibration, it can all be done very easy with a speedo healer, fantastic piece of kit.

Why not just get a new EXCEL rim laced up with stainless spokes, unless you are doing enduros , there is a good selection of tyres for you to use, MITAS or ARMY SPECIALS all in 17 inch and 21 inch

I ordered one a couple of days ago because I changed the rear sprocket, so I have 15/48 and the speedo is way out.

Yes, all the important dimensions are out there for the 17 inch rim. I wanted to change to the Talon hub anyway because of the shi**y cush drive Yamaha got. But I know, I didn't try the cush drive mod yet.
