RPM and gear changes
Hi I'm new to this so apologies if this topic has already been covered.
I am the proud owner of a 2004 XTX and have been riding it now for about 4 months. I bought the bike second hand and the previous owner has fitted a Stage 2 and a Fuel Mod, he also fitted a set of Staintune's. This is only my second bike. The bike has been regularly serviced at the specified times. A mate of mine, who has been riding for many years and lots on lots of different bikes took my XTX for a spin and expressed concern about it not revving freely at higher RPM's. I had not thought this a problem. Being a relatively new rider I am not trying to rev out in every gear and if I do get to the point where it starts spluttering (the rev limiter I think) I just change gears. So my question is, is this normal? Is the XTX a low revving bike, or should I get some one to have a look at it to see if its running to rich/lean/???? I appreciate your thoughts on this. |

What does your mate mean by not revving freely at higher rpm? Normally these bikes would surge at low rpm. I am not sure what he means, I hope he is not redilining the bike to the point where the rev limiter kicks in. Ask him to explain the sympthoms better. please. |

The standard exhausts are quite restrictive so throw on a set of after market cans.
If you want the power up top & want your XT to rev like hell, add a stage 2 hot cam with a stage 3 air box (59HP at the rear wheel) with peak HP near the rev limiter. I have owned quite a few big bore XT's & this 660 motor is the best free reving motor of the lot in my eyes. It also responds the best to engine mods.

Don't lend it to your mate again, Sounds like he wants to rev it to death.
No way you should be routinely hitting the rev limiter on a big single or any other bike, no point on your bike as you are way past the power whan you do this and its cruel! Rev limiters are certainly not there to advise that it's time for a gear change. Rather that its time to alter your riding style. for big revs I suggest a 4 cylinder sportsbike. Al. |

Thanks for all the feedback.
I asked him today to clarify what he was talking about, and he said the following. The XTX accelerated well until he went into a corner then it just cut out. He tried it again and it did the same thing again. He says that he has ridden lots of bikes like an XTX and that they should rev more freely and higher than mine. Lastly he thinks it is running too rich and it sounds like it is back firing allot. So a couple of points; The bike previously has cut out twice on me, however I had put in one fill of 91 ULP. Since then I have used a min of 95 RON and never had an issue. Personally I think the bike revs freely and I don't have an issue with it. That said this is only my second bike and I do not have allot of experience to compare it to. The bike does pop and fart quite a bit and it is quite loud (thanks to the Staintune pipes), which I think sounds great and once again do not have a problem. That said can any one tell me the approximate max speed in each gear before changing up? |

If the bike feels good to you, then what's the problem... Just enjoy your bike and gain some experience. I have a mate who constantly complains about the suspension on his bike, spent a forture getting it 'sorted', I won't ride with him as he is a knob on a bike, but the truth of the matter about his suspension 'problems' is his riding...... it sucks! Of course he has been riding since 1756 so he knows about bikes.......... or maybe not!

LOL, Very true that he may think that he knows more than he actually does!
In regards to the cutting out, yes the engine completely dies and needs to be restarted. This has only happened to me twice, and it was after I put in a tank of 91 RON fuel, since I have been using 95/98 RON I have not had the issue. I am surprised that my mate had the cutting out issue, and I have no explanation as to it did it to him. Maybe he was giving it a red hot go and is not used to the bike or something? The is a Kev's mod that has been fitted, but I must say I have not played with the setting, as it was set up by the previous owner and I am not sure what he has got it set to? The only information that I have is a note on the bikes manual that says "Kev's Mod @24 > adjusted to 19" I live in Melbourne would you suggest that I take the bike to get it checked out at all? I love riding the XTX and it does feel good to me, so I guess that is what counts! |

I offer full back up with all my mods so if you need the fitting & tuning instruction just ask.
As for your 04 XTX it should have had a TPS recall, check with Yamaha if it was ever done. Have a read here for some more details. http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?t=8546 http://www.xt660.com/showpost.php?p=142569&postcount=15
