Tyres, Adventure and the XTR v Versys
Help and advice needed please. Ex Tenere owner, so I know that bike. Sold it because - to me, maybe not you - it had just a tad too little power and given my general 90/10 on road/light off road, was maybe not different enough from my V Strom thou (yes, I hear the thunderous shouts 'total different animal'). However, my Strom, as much as I rate it as a long-distance hauler, is a handful off-road, even in the places my modest skills take it (picture slightly greasy H.U. meeting camping field). It's also a little heavy on fuel on long tours.
So I bought me a KLE650 Versys, thinking it might be a better compromise. My questions are about that and the XTR: - they share the same tyre size on 17 inch rims. has anyone fitted tyres to their XTR with a better off-road bias? (or indeed, a Versys if they've had one) - anyone with experience of riding both the XTR and the Versys? What's your viw on them, given what I've said about my riding needs with this type of bike. - I wonder if the Versys is the better road bike, but the XTR the better light trailing? All views and advice greatly appreciated. |

Was just about to reply but ive an R and never ridden the X, but did have a test ride on both models of the versys, good spread of power and it likes to have a wee race and a rally if you want to.
There should be a few people who have taken them off road as they offer bash plates etc for them, but as for the extent of there off roading i wouldnt say it would be anything great, maybe a wet field with a bit of mud or the odd rough stoney path at walking pace. The suspension is just too stiff for anything more than walking pace, saying that on the road its perfect (i just found it a little too small). You should be able to fit a set of Avon Diztania thingys to the bike, would give it a start to some off roading feel, i think you can also get TKC80's in that size or something similar but what they would feel like on/off road ive no idea ![]()
