Hi,
Looking for some help here; I need a hardcore batterry as I have quite a few electric eccessories, any suggestions? I have heard that Odyssey batteries are good. Also any suggestions of where to buy from? Thanks, James |

Tanya batteries got me one for my ducati. Trouble is when I looked for one for the ten it didnt seem to have a natural Oddessy replacement, also they are more about good cold cranking and long term storage than running lots of accessories above the alternator capacity. Ie if your running off the battery because the alternator cant keep up with demand it will still go flat regardless of it being an Oddessy or normal lead acid battery. what it needs is carefully management of your accessories or a larger capacity alternator (and regulator) which doesnt appear to exist off the shelf.
Ps coverting to 35w Hids will save you some wattage over the std halogen bulbs which can be make or break in a leccy overload situation as well as converting all other bulbs to LEDs, though LED indicators only save current if you use a pucka led indicator relay and not the current sink resistors they normal use to make stock relay work. |

Odyssey don't make a battery that will fit. The best alternative is a sealed battery from Westco that has a higher crank capacity than all the other batteries of the type that fits the Tenere.
I fitted one to my Ten earlier this year and found it worked a treat and never had any issues starting the bike when it was left for any length of time where as the standard battery struggled from time to time. I can't remember what it cost me but I removed it from the Tenere when i traded it in last week and it is too small to fit on the Versys so I am open to offers on it. It has been left connected to my Optimate since being removed from the bike so should be good to go! Al. |

I have fitted LED side lights as this frees up an extra 9 watts. Have not had a problem at all and ride all the way through the winter. I will be fitting Solstice spots as well.

The alternators marginal capacity was discussed on another thread some time ago (cant recall which one - but I did post on it- and I think its about 290Watts total from memory)
Issue usually raises its head if running big watt halogen spots/headlight (none HID) heated grips, and other heavy current accessories (like heated vest) etc. GPS/phones are very low current draw devices so dont normally trouble the battery /alternator (assuming thier in good health) . |

Its all about the wattage (and hence the current /Amps ) each item draws.
Stock Alternator is rated at 14volts/20.8Amps at 5k revs which according to physics gives ~291Watts of power to use to run the bike. Note Alternators (from memory) usually have a fairly flat o/p rating over thier operation range once above a certain revolution (figure on 2k revs as safe bottom end?-made up guess but its for starters ) So if you bike requires 5amps just to run ignition Fuel injection (about 70watts -guess for starters) then the break down could be as follows Headlight -stock 55watts rear lamp 5 watts side lamps think these are 3.5watts each so 7watts Fogs ? 55watts? x 2 110 watts Heated grips I've seen quotes from 30Watts a pair to 28Watts each grip so you'll have to google the spec of the ones you have. assumed 35Watts total so adding that all up we have ~282Watts of power drain. Leaving ~10Watts spare for other sundry items of current drain, ie indicators, brake lamp (21watts!) dash lamps (left them out). Not a lot of extra left when you consider it especially if its all on at idle when alternator o/p is lower. Which is why I mention careful management of accessories is required (especially heated clothing spot light combos) as it wont take much extra load to start hitting the battery . Note All the above is a quick fag packet estimate using expected values, if someone wants to research say the engine drain figures for a more accurate estimate please go ahead. |

That's exactly why I have changed the sidelights to LED and will fit Solstice driving lamps which are much lower wattage @10W each and will fit an HID dip beam. Should leave plenty to keep the battery topped uo. I also intend to fit one of those Gammatronix LED indicators ith a switch to keep an eye on battery condition.

I just fiited the LED Gamm* indicator and it fits neatly and works a treat just for that reason
