Oil consumption

Hi guys, i'm close to the 10k service, 9600 or so by this moment. I had the 1k service done and since then I haven't checked the oil level at all. I know, I know, I should have but can't go back... anyway - i checked it today and the level was so low that i couldn't get any oil on the dipstick. Put about 300ml to get it in the middle of the min / max markers on the dipstick.

So, if the level was right at the 1k service, i'm 300ml / 8600km or so... out of which i reckon about 1500 or so were highway, with passenger or solo, at 150km/h... rest of riding would be 1500 max city/commuting, about 1k offroad ( trails, fire roads and alike ), the rest 4.5k or so were regular roads mixed riding... I generally ride 30km or so above posted limits and beside highways i don't think that's a stress for the engine.

On the previous bike wasn't unusual to put some oil after highway or harder riding but i wasn't expecting this on a the Tenere and the face and laugh that the guy from the Yamaha dealership made when I asked if I should check the oil from now and throw 1l for completion in the top box kind of removed oil level check from my routine...

Anyway, right after I completed the oil I'm feeling the gearbox works nicer ( might be placebo tho ) and that makes me wonder how much i might have affected the engine or if the posted oil consumption is normal at that kind of riding. I'm also wondering, considering I haven't checked the level after the first service if it was right on the first place and if it weren't if it might have had any kind of effects on the engine.

you need to check your oil level carefully. Refer to your handbook or you will get incorrect readings.

I did it as described in the service manual. Let the engine run for 10-15 mins and check after with bike on centerstand on flat.

if you search the forum you will find the info somewhere. You have to check the oil immediately after stopping.

exactly that's how i did. twice to be sure, twice after completing. checked the forum but I can't find info on if 300ml is abnormal or not and if it might have been a problem

Look under XTR....GENERAL DISCUSSIONS....OIL LEVEL..

Did you ride the bike before the oil check, or just have it ticking over?
