What chain tool?

Hi guys

I will soon be replacing my chain and sprockets, and hate to pay someone to do it when I could get the tool and do it myself........therefore I need the tool.

I could search around the internet all day long looking at different chain breakers/riveters, but I wouldn't know which to choose.

Can anyone recommend me a certain chain tool? I don't want to spend silly money, probably looking at 40, maybe a bit more.

Cheers!

Harry

I use a grinder to split the old chain. Then I use the EK "threaded" joiner link. So, no special tools required. There's bound to be lots of other opinions on here, just decide what is right for you.

I borrow one of these from a friend...

http://www.intobikes.co.uk/products/...ghlight=052712

They're not cheap, but they work and are utterly indestructable. Something which cannot necessarily be said for the assorted 'screw in' types.

As said above, angle grinder to split the old chain. Or a hacksaw if you're poor and patient

Harry,

Having just fitted a new chain to my Ten and breaking the chain tool I bought from M&P a few years ago (are they making chains stronger these days?) I was searching for a better and more robust product. After a bit of research I've just bought one of these from Ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWNX:IT

I believe it's a clone of the DID RM500 and there's an encouraging review here:

http://vfrworld.com/forums/mechanics...ool-km500.html

There's also a useful link to an article with photos on how to change your chain on the above link.

It's itching to be tried out (I'll have a play with it at some point on the old chain I've just taken off) and you're more than welcome to borrow it.

Simon

It's important to grind, hacksaw, file off the rivited bit of the pin first.

If you are using the split link then a file, hammer and nail is all ya need.

This is my weapon of choice...

http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/pr...nd-accessories

You can either get it of 'tinternet, telephone or go into the shop.

It's indestructable, but maybe a bit more than you need (I have three bikes, so it works well for me). You can buy spares if by some remote chance you break something, or more often, lose something!

Easy to use.

It will split a chain too without the need for a saw or grinder - assiming you don't want to use it again (the chain that is).

The choices for you are endless..... but if you are going to buy one, get one that will last a lifetime.

Me too.....

and my drill,

and my welder.....

and all the other bits spread over the workshop & garage, it's just a little more adult at times to use something that doesn't make a noise! (read:so the wife doesn't hear, promting the usual, "now what have you bought")
