Fitting the H&B rear rack......

I ordered an H&B from Off the Road in Germany. It should just take a minute to install right? Well I thought so, but according to the instructions it uses a 65mm bolt for the front of the rack and a 90mm bolt for the rear. These bolts are way too long, the front ones bottom out in the frame, there is no room for them to keep screwing in. The rear is the same way, a 90mm bolt is way too long. Re-using the stock bolts from the hand rails isn't an option either, as they're a bit too short. Anyone else run in to this problem? Not sure why then send out 65mm and 90mm bolts.

Looks like they screwed up. Just buy some replacement bolts of the correct size. Or did they expect you to use the existing grabrail as well?

Step one of the instructions says to remove them, and they won't be used any more.

Mate I ran into the same problem as you.

I'm away from home in Sydney for the week but from memory I fixed the issue by using a combination of one of the sets of supplied bolts and one set of the grab rail bolts. Again from memory the back bolts (?) were only just long enough but when torqued up all has been fine - including a trip up the Oonadatta track

OK.. so I'm not crazy... Got an email from H&B stating..

Quote:
We use 8x50 and 8x60 mm screws.
So the 65mm and 90mm bolts were incorrectly included in my kit.

Here's what I received...

I think those bolts are for the pannier and rack kit

Mine all went together but I was putting both a rack and panniers on.

But I don't remember what length the bolts where.

All you have to remember is:

If at first you don't succeed, get a bigger hammer.

G'day Rearviewmirror

Just get a hacksaw and put them in a vice and cut them back and then file the sharp edges off at the start of the thread... problem solved.

cheers
Reg.

From the sounds of it they sent you out the bolts for if you putting on rear rack and pannier frame as they normally use the same connection points so you need the longer bolts.
