TBM have a test of S10

For those who dont subscribe, TBM have tested the S10 in this months issue (just out) , seems they think it is more an alternative to the 1200GS rather than being a better bike. The test is of the silver version which is a shame as it looks dull and they say you'd have to be certified to order the silver colour compared to blue. Price as always seems to stick in the throat.

There is also a first-ride report (a few pages, but mainly big pictures) in BIKE magazine this month... they say much the same thing: that it's a quality piece of kit, but [particularly for the price] it doesn't move things on significantly from the 1200GS (other than it has Traction Control and ABS as standard)... unlike the Ducati Multistrada which they say/think is a genuine technical advancement...

Yeah, of course it is - but then the Multistrada is a road bike!!!

I read that, funny though, the S10 was compared to the GS, not the GS-A, so the price and weight tables made the GS look better.........

I have TBM in front of me (along with a pile of mail - Holidays! they take up so much time!) and usually these guys give a much more 'adventure' lean on thier write ups than the god awfull road bias mags.

MCN have the 'first' test ride of the S10 in next weeks issue....

I agree with you Keith - in an ideal world this bike would have been priced 'competitively' at 11,995...

However, while the magazines are quick to make the [price] comparison with the regular 1200GS, this bike is aimed far more squarely at the GSA type rider - that is with more off-road pretensions - spoked wheels, alloy bash-plate, luggage included in the price etc.

If I worked for Yamaha, I might also draw your attention to the 'whole life' cost of the bike - that is servicing, insurance etc etc etc. I bet if you added the cost of ownership over 3 years say, it would be far closer if not considerably in the Yamaha's favour?

That said, the big Katoom rocks if your priority is scratching and off-road thrills!

In Australia the S10 is slightly cheaper than the 1200GS. Neither base model has luggage as standard.

I was ready to bag out the bid 10 until I sat on one. A surprisingly low c of g, nice finish, good ergos. Nice bike!

The write up was written by a guy who had it a week and did some trails, he gave it a good thumbs up apart from - yes you guessed it 'the price'. He did a comparison against the (predictably) GS but he did make a good point, he took a standard GS and listed all the optional extras you could have and he still had a spare 200.00 compared to the S10!

If Yamaha reviewed their pricing and lowered it to make it more competitive this bike would sell in the thousands IMHO! What is their strategy behind this? They can not be going for exclusivity as that doesn't make sense when they are launching a bike that is obviously there to take away some of BMW's sales. A financially desperate Company trying to increase revenue by over pricing when the could decrease the price and sell more units!

Had the price been more realistic it would have been in my garage now instead of Katie M. It ticked all the boxes for me except the price!
The price is a problem for Yamaha.
It's not that they are greedy, I did some sums recently between when I bought my 08 Tenenere and now regarding the exchange rate of the Yen.
It was then 212 Yen to the Pound, now its about 134 Yen to the pound. If the rate was currently still 212 the Super Tenere would be a bit over 9000.
They are not beeing greedy, they still have the same manufacturing costs but a sh!tty rate to deal with foreign markets. This is why the XT660Z has gone up so much in the last two years.

I have to defend it, I just paid 14,300 for my farkled one !!!! It's a good job it's only money...Doh!

The other Japanese companies don't seem to be using this excuse to rip everyone off though! Even the Honda VFR 1200 is cheaper!

Loss leaders.... Yamaha don't have the financial ability to sell them at a loss.

Besides, the new VFR is pugg ugly, so they have to sell it cheap!

It's amazing what a road bike can do when fitted with the right tyres.
