Brake Discs rusting

Hi folks, does anyone know the best way/or product for removing rust from the discs.
I went to give my bike a little spruce up yesterday and couldn't believe the amount of rust on the discs especially the rear rotors. I tried my anka de manka spray (brake cleaner solvent) but this only removed the light brake dust and surface rust leaving some more heavy deposits.
To be fair the bike is kept outside but surely it shouldn't be this bad after only 5 months?????? My last bike was a suzuki fer petes sake and they didn't even rust this bad after 8 years!!!!!!!

Also while I am here dose any one know what the little weight things are on some of the spokes on the wheel???? and has anyone needed to have their spokes tightened as one or two of mine feel not loose but move slightly and sound dull compared to the others which 'ping' if that makes sense........phew ,I am glad I got that all off my chest!!!

Cheers as always Phil

Oh forgot to add, my rear brake caliper seems to 'float' quite a bit, is this normal?it looks likde it should float but kindas clonks back and forward, but if not how should one tighten it as there does not seem to be any exposed bolts

They are the balancing weights, great idea on the bike, but difficult to get hold of when you get the trye replaced - normally go back to the self adhesive ones.

It should float, but on a lateral plane (side to side to allow the brake pads to wear down) - it sounds as if yours is moving in a liner plane, doesn't sound right, mine doesn't do it, not that I can tell anyway.

I just got my bike since the 12th sept. and i've also noticed some light rust on the discs.
I also keep him outside, but out of the wind and rain.

Hope it's not getting any worse.

My bike has lived outside 100% of the time since I got it and been used to commute in all weather all year round for the last 11 1/2 months. I noticed that when left after some rain or wet weather riding (or after being washed) that the dics would build up a small layer of rust on the braking surface but that was always cleaned off the next time I rode it (5 days a week).

Other than that the rust buildup was not that bad, especially as I never even attempted to clean it off. Just a very small amount in the cooling holes and on the littled link discs that connect the brake disc to the wheel. I'm sure you could clean it off with a wire brush for the holes or somesuch if you're concerted (and making sure they don't get left damp).

At the end of the day remember they are a consumable part. I had my disc replaced last month under warranty (mine had warped) and they look as good as new ... for the moment!

Go for some brake cleaner and green scotch brite. All ways works on my MX bikes brake discs and I will be using the same when the Tenere needs it. It also depends on the pads because they can leave metal deposits when they abrade away. They are not classed as sintered metal for nothing!
