Single or Double Brake Discs?

I am curious to know if anyone who has gone from the stock double brake discs to single (such as JMo on her 'project'), and if notice any significant reduction in braking power. I am thinking about going for the wave disc, but just not sure if I should go for single or keep it double.

Keep it double, Ive an XTR which has the single disc and would say the single disc is ok for general riding but if you load the bike up the front can get over worked, or if you do a bit of higher speed stuff cough racing cough then the single disc gets over worked and you can feel it loosing power.

Stay with the double,

Hi Joseph,

I would also say stick with the double - i'm pretty sure the brakes on the XTR are the same as the Ten, just that there's only one - and the single brake on my XTR scared the sh*t out of me when i had luggage on - unless you really want to save weight i dont think its worth it.

Alternatively, go for a single and an uprated caliper? although then all braking effort goes into one disc, more chance of brake fade if on a long decent i suppose, but i dont really know how likely that is.

A recent trip to the Dolomites proved tricky for some of the 'lighter' orange trail bikes riding in the group.
Very steep trails with many hairpins saw the brakes boiling into submission resulting in the bikes having to be 'rested' en route down the trails.
My Tenere though, not a problem.
I put it down to the mass of the front and rear hubs enabling heat to be dissapated away from the calipers/pads.
Now removing a disc may cause over heating of the brakes, especially if the bike has extra load aboard.

A 320mm disk with a 4 piston caliper should provide same or higher breaking power as stock dual 298, dual caliper setup.

I'm thinking about it, since I have a 21" /single disk wheel laying around and I want a second set of tyres with knobbies, XTZ OEM wheels are way too expensive, you save weight too.

Anyway, I'm not going to do it in a very near future.

have fun,

j.

If you fit a 320mm disc then I agree you shouldn't have any problem - supermotos are hard on the brakes, and they manage fine with such a single disc (although admittedly a supermoto tends to weigh a lot less than a Tenere!)...

As others have said, the brakes on the Tenere are great, especially if two-up and/or with luggage... if you don;t use the bike in that capacity then a single disc ought to be fine...

For info, I have a 270mm Braking Wave disc (that's 30mm less than a single Tenere disc!), Goodridge stainless steel braided hose and a Brembo master cylinder (the same as a KTM 690 Enduro) - that set up has great feel, and plenty of fluid capacity in the master cylinder - I'd say it's perfect if you are not planning on loading up to capacity, so in that respect, a single 320mm disc ought to be more than fine!
