Hi grumpy. I might be able to help you. I have a 2008 XT660R, and I too was supplied with an original Yamaha tall wind deflector and yes I did finally manage to get it installed myself with all the parts supplied (no thanks to the confusing instructions!). It is not difficult - it turned out to be quite simple.

Its the middle of the night at the moment so I will get back to you tomorrow with some more details.

I'll tell you one thing now though - the original screen comes off and stays off.
