I finally got around to making a metal mesh cover for the XT and took some pics.

The metal sheet was from B & Q 50cm x 25cm �5-�10 - various styles are available.

I cut mine a little shorter to just fit over the original plastic opening but on the sheets above there is more than enough metal to make it bigger.

I fixed it to the plastic with tie straps.

XTR - Black and modded for greenlaning - now sold and replaced with an Aprilia Pegaso Factory. Hey, at least I've gone with the same engine!
