But most importantly it is a safety issue. The service manual says to replace them every 4 years. That may be excessive but when you decide to change them you can just as well go with stainless. You can get them in black surface if you dont want them to stand out.

I've not replaced mine yet, but have done it on all previous motorcycles when the get to 8-10 years.
