Exhaust and fire

I'm about to install my new MTC exhaust on my Tenere. You might have found that I have asked more than a few questions about heat and fire before buying it. But that is simpy because I have had bad luck in the past.

My first motorcycle was a small 150ccm Aprilia Leonardo which I mostly used arround town.

I had bought some cheap saddlebags from Louis. But they did'nt survive the first longer trip with my girlfriend.

After ~150km I saw an orange glow in the mirror.

The right saddlebag was on fire and when we stopped the flames was level with the top of the luggage box. I pushed/yelled my girlfriend of the scooter (she had'nt noticed what was going on) and I teared the luggage off and stamped out the fire. The right blinker was also on fire and I put it out with my gloved hand.

I was lucky. The only damage to the scooter a slightly heat damaged plastic panel and right blinker which burned with the saddlebag and (incl. my girlsfriends clothes - my own stuff was in the other side :-).

Before we took off I had checked that there was at least 5cm between the bag and the exhaust but it must have moved ...

I don't have pictures of the fire itself. I had other priorities than taking pictures...

Here is first two pictures of the burned blinker. About 1/3 of it is just gone up in the flames. The bulb did not survive the heat. I managed to get it working for the ride home - I just put in a new bulb and kept it in place with silicone.

Btw we got married later the same year and has been so for 17 years :-)

When i bought my XTZ750 Super Tenere in 2006 it had a race exaust that Ii changed for a used original one before I could get it registered in my name. I rode with that for a few years and then bought another original ones because it had startles to rattle... When the second one was worn out I fell for a GPR road legal exhaust. The price was right and it looked fine on it... But shortly after i found that I hat a head issue. This time it was without a fire but it had just melted the lamp....I took the easy way out and fitted som mini ones that was just our of the warm exhaust gasses...

So just a reminder to pay attention when fitting after market exhausts - The exhaust can be so hot that it can set plastic on fire and the exhaust gasses can also melt/ignite flammable materials
