RedDog is on a distinguished road
I have a 2005 XTX with 27000 miles and have had trouble with the tickover for the last 3 years. It is used every day for work rain or shine.
It started rising and falling at random during my 30 minute commute. Sometimes it ticked over nicely, then by the next traffic lights it was racing away. Two stops later, back to normal.
I took off the tank and throttle body, cleaned all connectors, nothing obviously wrong that I could find. Put it all back together and it was fine for a few months.
Then it started doing it once or twice a month.

I also had the revs increase when in gear, but dropped back down when in neutral. This was fixed by lowering the tickover to 1600. It was doing over2000 but as I couldn't get the rpm to show I was not aware, I knew it sounded too high.

Now for the first 10 mins of my journey it ticks over at 1600, for the next 10 it goes up to 2000, then by the end it is back to 1600. My rev counter works now, before it only showed 0.

It could be engine/ coolant temp related, but why does it drop back down again on the same journey. Same for an air leak, why would it go up and down?

Anyway I found an expensive fix for it.
I traded the bike in against a new one 😀
