I think it sounds like it could be a weak spring in the neutral switch itself? Pulling the clutch causes the transmission internals to stop rotating which in turn probably reduces the vibrations enough within the gearbox to prevent the switch contacts wobbling (due to the weak spring) and the light to stop dimming and flickering. What you describe are typical symptoms of a worn neutral light switch.
