Not sure whether the grip puppies won't be to larger diameter to fit over just the bar? If you are going to remove the stock grips and want a foam alternative, why not consider fitting foam grips from the off?

I have Grip Puppies and they are brilliant. I know what you mean about the extra thickness, but they do compress a little over time. Also is you fit some cheap CNC span adjustable levers, the thickness becomes less of an issue.
