I find recording in 1080 to be a bit redundant, the file sizes are enormous, you need a really fast computer to be able to edit properly.
720p at 60fps is good enough quality and allows for those slo-mo edits.
I use a piece of software called AviDemux to cut sections out of my films. This won't convert or degrade the quality, it simply cuts out segments.
I then use the GoPro free app to edit the clips together, add music and transitions.
Takes about ten minutes to create a small edited video.
