Those plug in O2 sensor eliminators don't work and is probably why it's now over rich. The ECU needs to receive more complex information than what you get from a simple resistor bridging the connections (which is all these plugs are). Also the heater element connections are bridged too, so the O2 sensor's heater doesn't operate, which will in a fairly short space of time knacker the O2 sensor completely.

Remove it and reconnect the O2 sensor plug.

Quite why fitting the MTC cans made it feel worse, I'm not sure? Could you explain how it felt worse?

Not really. Running rich will just spoil performance, cost you a fortune in fuel and the motor will get particularly "boggy" when warm and stall more easily in hot weather. In rare cases, a very rich mixture can cause "bore wash", where excess fuel washes around the piston rings causing excessive engine wear and the chances of fuel getting into the oil, but it does have to be so rich that neat petrol is coming out the exhaust! Bore wash normally occurs when an injector gets stuck open and you really notice the fuel consumption drop off, sometimes into single figures!
