Ten conked out - no charge

The yellow engine warning light came on when I was riding home from work, so I pulled over and cut the engine. When I attempted to start it again the battery was flat and the warning light was flashing intermittently. Clearly there's a problem with the charging system. The lovely people from Yamaha Assist re-charged the battery and kindly followed me the 8 miles home. When home, my voltmeter gave a reading of 11 volts which continued to diminish with the engine running. So, the bike, which is 8 months/3000 miles old, has now been taken to my local Yam dealer to be sorted out under warranty.
Anyone had this sort of problem quite so soon?
I guess the problem probably lies with the alternator or rec/reg?
(It's the first time I've properly broken down in 38 yrs & 100,000's of miles - very disappointing!)
