BUT it seems that I would need to change forks too so perhaps is not a practical idea, so another compromise might be to have two sets of standard XTX wheels, one with standard road tyres (I have Pirelli Diablos) and then one with semi off road tyres. What tyres are available in 17" which are ok for some gentle off road????? Thanks.
I have Distanzias but to put my "off roading" into perspective I don't do mud or sand just stoney, loose mountain service tracks and mostly two up so I ride slow and carefully. You could use Continental TKC80 twinduros on 17" rims, that's the most I'd ever need. I'd like to lace a 19" rim to the front but the suspension is the biggest issue at the moment. I also have a 1984 XT600 which we did the Alps on last year. For us it was just great off road suspension wise and also nice soft power delivery. I had already laced an 18" front rim to it (from 21") to quicken up the turning on tarmac and it seems a good on/off road compromise. Sadly though the XT600 just doesn't have enough welly two up on the open road. Which brings me back to the XTX. Maybe I should stick 'em both on the trailer next year. Nah! I still want to sort out the suspension on the XTX, front then rear.
