Either way you will really need an inline fuse on the supply to the GPS to protect that particular circuit. If you rely on the fuse for the side/tail lamps (which is 10A) it won't protect a relatively low power consuming circuit (like for the GPS) adequately. Ideally you need to choose a fuse rating slightly higher than the peak current rating of the accessory (and its circuit). Eg: If your GPS consumes 2A (25W) then you'll need a 3A fuse to protect it.

Inline fuse holders are cheap as chips - normally they are supplied with GPS power leads?
