Nothingness? That hurts. Admittedly this time of the year is a very bad time to be riding across that country.

But usually the crossing is interesting if you want it to be. It's often different: different seasons, animals, weather (very hot is the default around now) and so on. It's a matter of looking and seeing, imo. As distinct from looking just to cover distance. The vastness alone is impressive. There is nothing like wide, open space. It soothes the soul while all is going well, and can frighten poo out of you when it isn't.

Night travel is risky, especially if you're using only the Tenere's awful headlight. Day travel is risky if it's really hot. You can dehydrate beyond recovery. A Japanese rider overheated and died one day when I was riding down from Alice Springs to Adelaide. Plenty of water doesn't necessarily ensure survival. You can cark it with a bellyfull. It reaches a point where it can't be distributed fast enough. But you probably know all this anyway, as most widely-travelled people research things properly.
