here's an idiot proof method.....

Take a handfull of coins, 2 Pence coins (UK) are perfect.

Before even attempting to put the spring on the bike, bend it, then in the gaps put the coins. Then bend it the other way, put the coins in the gaps.

What you are left with is a spring long enough to fit without danger to fingers, bike or eyes! Put it on the bike and with a pair of plies start to remove all of the coins. As each coin is removed the spring shortens.

Sorted.

(the small inner spring is easy enough to pull with screwdriver/pliers etc.
