There is so much difference in chain tension between the bike being on the side stand leaning over, being almost upright on the side stand - ie blocks placed under the stand and when you are sat on the bike that for me the final acid test is sitting on the bike (or gettin the wife to sit on the bike) and making sure that you still have some decent amount of play in the chain no matter what position the bike is in when you actually do the adjustment - hope this makes sense when I re-read this!
