I've got my zumo 550 plugged to that connector for years now, without a problem. I didn't use an extra fuse as the connector is on the same circuit as the parking lights, and is fused. If you want to power the zumo while filling up at the gassstation, simply, turn the ignition to 'park'. I just cut off the connector,it's only there as a power supply for diagnostics,so it's not that important.

You took the words right out of my mouth!
That's exactly the set up that I have except that when I have had the bike running and Zumo on and then switch the engine off I get a prompt on the Zumo asking me if I want to stay
ON or OFF, on battery power, no fussing with going onto park lights.
No extra in-line fuse.
