Hole in fuel filler neck
Because I was fed up with the slow fuel filling (especially the last liters) I made a hole in the filler neck to let the air out and to speed up the filling.
Remove the screws on top and one on the inside of the cap (don't drop them:cwm10:) http://i39.tinypic.com/2nun9ex.jpg Checked if the was room between the neck and the tank: yes there is. http://i40.tinypic.com/15xa7ap.jpg Drill a hole (6 mm), don't go to far!! http://i44.tinypic.com/4kz706.jpg Finished http://i43.tinypic.com/k9sv10.jpg Tank is full so I don't know if it works, to be continued...... |
Interesting. I was thinking of doing that, as the last few drops of fuel take ages to put in, but reading the owners manual, it says the air gap is necessary. Let us know how you get on, and if this allows you to squeeze another litre in!! :eusa_think:

The air bubble is needed for stupid people who will fill the tank completely, put the bike in the sun and have a hamburger (and then sue Yamaha). Will fill up the tank tomorrow.

In my case, probably best leaving it well alone. Even during the summer, with it being stored underground, fuel is still very cold when it first goes into your tank but soon expands in the sun. don't want to be blowing fuel out of the breather pipes right in the track of the back tire!! IF I was to drill the hole out, I'd forget !! I'm not sure how much fuel expands by but the allowence in the tank is only 4.5% - doesn't sound like much does it? When you do fill it and the tank fills you may well get a jet of fuel coming out of the hole (only for a second when your full), just watch your eyes! - could you confrm if this is a problem or not ?? |
Tried filling up today. No fuel shower, no leakage of fuel, fast filling till 2 cm to the top of the neck, then foaming starts and filling becomes slow.
I'm happy with it.:thumbsup[1]: |

If you're going to do this i'd strongly suggest using a hand drill not an electric one !! Even a battery powered one can have sparks around the motor commutator and that is not a good thing to have near a tank of petrol !

New record
Yesterday I put in 23.95 L :icon_eek:. I came at the fuel station without stuttering with 110 km on the F-trip.
|
Done it to my XTX & now can get an extra 15kms until the fuel light comes on.
I would only recommend one does this mod, by over fulling the fuel tank, if you are going to ride the bike at least 20kms before parking the bike, otherwise the extra fuel will over flow in hot conditions.:109: WARNING Please only use a air or hand drill, do not use a electric drill around fuel vapour. http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...x/DSCF2388.jpg |
Has anyone had problems with the plastic bits in the tank , and i was thinking of a 10mm hole , to big or not ?
Cheers Phil |
This is one of those quick, free and easy mods that I must get round to actually doing!

Morn'in Phil... Smear grease on the drill bit, drill slowly and it'll catch the swarf. :) . |
Good thinking batman :3some:
I know the stuff will probably float and the in tank filter would catch it , but best be safe Cheers Phil |

I've drilled the metal tank of my old super tenere a few years ago. Then i emptied the tank and filled it with water just to be on the safe side.
The plastic tank of the pony was easier. Just a piece of towel into it and drilled the hole with first 3mm, then 4.5mm and then 6mm. Against every advise i used a electric cordless drill. Figured that the motor was so far from the opening that ist would not be a problem. Besides it was windy so my garage was pretty good ventilated. |
