Chopping the tail...

Has anyone any info about a replacement rear end (shorter) for the Tenere?

I've just picked mine up, and love everything about it apart from the elephant trunk rear end!

I read that Off-the-road might be developing a rear fender replacement (rather than cutting up the undoubtedly expensive Yamaha original) and I emailed them with regards to integrating the indicators into the individual rear light lenses - neat huh?

However, they inform me that it wouldn't be 'legal' in Europe?! (or at least were OTR are...) - although since when has that bothered bikers?!

Anyway, I've emailed Clear Alternatives in the US (I have one of their combined LED tail/indicator units on my Ducati Monster) to see if they would be interested in developing something for the Tenere. I know it's not a US model (yet), but reckon they would have a large market overseas...

It also happens that I'll be taking my Tenere over to Las Vegas in the next couple of months, so they would have something to work with...

What do you guys think?

Integrate the rear indicators into the twin tail lights, and attach the number plate to the panel below the lamps (which happens to be exactly the right size for a US numberplate btw.)... job done?

Well I saw a Tenere yesterday at the Ace Cafe that had a modified tail end as you can see in these pics:

The owner was not a forum member, I did give him a business card so hopefully he might join and tell us what he used.

Aha - yes, that is a very similar idea to what I have in mind...

If you remove the existing numberplate light, you have two little bolt holes which you could attach a bracket to (bent at around 45, parallel to the upper mudguard section). If you use a 7x5.5 inch numberplate (typical enduro bike size that doesn't attract too much attention), it would sit very nicely below the rear lights, while still leaving the indicators and rear reflector visible - and you'd only need to cut the plastic protrusion below the reflector...

I see this guy used the oval R&G number plate light, but I believe they do a cylindical one too that would fit very neatly in the panel below the rear lights?

Hell, I'm going to get the dremil out... x

scottnet 31-08-08 12:12

I was just about to do the same thing! Please let me know how you get on with the Dremel!

scottnet 07-09-08 12:51

Did you find a neat oval number plate light?

maxwell123455 07-09-08 12:57

nice piccies captmoto, just love the look of those panniers/bike combo, just makes me want to go touring:110:

What I actually wanted was a round/cylindrical one to fit in the recess between the two lights (at 90 to the plate itself) - R&G don't do that type anymore, just the eliptical/rugby ball shape one in the pictures above... but I found a company on ebay selling they type I wanted.

Got the metal bracket made up, just got to get the dremil out tomorrow now...

Will keep you posted...

ps. Got an email reply from Clear Alternatives in the USA (the company that make the combined LED brake/tail and indicator inserts) - I asked them if they would consider making a combined tail/indicator LED insert for the twin rear lights, together with clear rear lenses which you really need if the orange LEDs are to show up properly... anyway, they are very interested in seeing my bike when I get to Vegas next month, even though the XTZ is not a US model (yet?) - I guess they believe there is a sufficient market in the rest of the world to make it worth their while?

davontour 08-09-08 09:15

more questions?

Are those the standard hand guards and Renthal bars?
Also I see he has mounted the GPS on the bracket sucessfully? I had heard it didnt work to well there?

Looking at the picture above, they look like Acerbis Rally Pro handguards with the additional spoilers... the bars could be Renthal, or the originals with just a Renthal pad?

The GPS works well there (although I'd say the space is more suited to the Zumo or other lower profile unit), it's just you shouldn't use power socket behind the dash panel, but run the power lead back to the battery or cut into the loom on the brake light (or sidelight) circuit if you want it switched with the ignition...

What pipes are those Mudcrawler, and could I be cheeky and ask for some under-tail shots of the link pipe(s) please?

Nice photos that stealth bike looks the dogs.:bounce016:

NickW909 04-02-09 18:25

Also, for any 'tail choppers'......

Any probs with mud getting flung up by the back wheel?

Nick.

mudcrawler 04-02-09 18:35

Its Leovince SBK. A kit for Tenere with link pipe. It goes 2-1-2.... funny.

mudcrawler 04-02-09 23:15

Pix of the piping .... Cute 2-1-2....

Nice one, thanks for that.

cotthem 05-02-09 20:24

I was wondering, what if you use the leovince as a single can. (cut off the second can).
I dont like two cans on my bike, its visual heavy.

or just block it (or cut the pipe but leave the silencer ? ) and use the silencer as a tool box as they do for the GS650

here you go.......

JMo 01-03-09 03:30

Ah, I forgot I'd started this thread...

Thanks for the photo Yam6, but I was thinking of something a little less Heath Robinson (ahem)...

Until Clear Alternatives come up with the goods, this will have to suffice:

ps. still like the idea of a single left hand can and a false right hand one for tools as zOU posted...

Funny you should say that Nick... I do get a fine mist of road grime over my luggage (on the rack and rear seat) when it's been raining... no problem with mud though...

Hi JMo, that rear turn signal you have, I remember you posted this before but I couldn't find it, could you please let me know again where you got it? And how do you find them? And is the installation complicated, for a technically-challenged like myself?

Hi Josephau - this is the thread:

http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?t=8822

That explains pretty much everything... the company who make the elecropods also make the LED 'indicator strips' as a pair...

Fitting is a bit fiddly - you have measure the hole centres carefully (bearing in mind you need to bend the strip in two planes in the middle) and I found that heating up the silicon strip in bowl of hot water helped fitting them into the recess. Then you secure them with clear silicon sealant.

Also, you'll need to get one of those flasher relays specifically for LEDs - the Motrax one for Kawasaki's is a direct replacement (connector fits the loom)for the one under the seat, although it is a different shape so you'll have to jiggle the rubber mounting around, but it does fit.

Good luck... (or just wait until CA sort out the combi tail light?)

Any other decent tail mods out there?
Im looking for ideas/inspiration.

BigB 11-05-09 01:57

I've made a bracket to move the number plate and indicators up closer to the rear tail light.
made it from 25mm x 3mm flat bar, 260mm long.
bent it to shape and drilled holes for the indicators and to mount it.
to mount it there are 2 self tapper screws on the inside of the light unit at the bottom.
took these out and fitted the bracket.
then moved the number plate bracket up, and moved the reflector down where the number plate bracket was.

looks smart, i like it!

did you use the standard plate? looks a wee bit large, think i'm tempted to go for a 7x5.5

funny this thread should come up again, i've just ordered my new plate lamp to do this mod.

Pete.

BigB 12-05-09 01:29

plate is standard.

small number plates around our way will get you pulled.

save yourself the hassle and stick with the standard one.

Peatbog 12-05-09 09:31

fair enough, fortunately the cops round here aren't so bad, handy really as i've found something really smart, pefectly legible but definately non standard....watch this space :)

I've been meaning to post these pictures for a while now.

While out at the Adelaide Farm Cafe bike meeting near Sandwich there was a Tenere there that had a very tidy looking cleanup of the rear end.

The indicators had been moved up and were connceted through the bolt holes on the side of the 'rack' the terene has. The real light indicator was moved to the underside of the rack pointing down and the number plate was moved up and the excess plastic chopped off.

Pics arn't great as it was dark and I only had my phone with me but hopefully enough to get the idea across.

stoo24 12-05-09 19:04

Could be quite easy to obscure the indicators with luggage on a rack with that setup but does look neat. Are there any rules about distance of number plate light away from the plate itself or does it have to adhere to a specific illumination standard?

"Clearly visible" woudl be my guess as to the requirement from memory. I don't think they could sensibly specify a standard as they woudl have to measure it in lumens I guess (or bulb wattage)

oldbaldy 12-05-09 22:43

chopping the tail

hurry up then peatbog getting an itchy hacksaw:question:

Peatbog 12-05-09 23:34

givvus a chnce it's coming in the post tomorrow! :)

BigB 13-05-09 02:41

i was going to cut my tail unit up
but decided not to.
thinking if i messed it up, it will cost mega bucks to replace.
it looks like the light and tail is one complete unit.

Hi BigB - it's not one part, its loads of parts! - including a huge chunk of metal for some reason? The lamp itself is separate to the plastic 'mudguard' part and is sandwiched between the mudguard and metal support part (which weighs a ton!), along with assorted screws and bolts etc.

I'm sure you could price up the individual components at your dealer before deciding to take a hack saw to it if you wanted?

thought i'd update this post as i said watch this space then didn't do anything...sorry!

i priced the plastic part of the tail and was told 26(ish) +Vat. so I thought that for that price it wasnt worth trying to do something in ally when the standard one lends itself so well to moving the plate up. After all i like the stock tail lamp etc, i just wanted to make the bike's ass a bit smaller.

in the end i've finished up with something virtually the same as Jmo's, the 'watch this space' bit didn't work as when the plate arrived it was so small i would've been shot on sight if i'd used it on the road. What i did get though was a polycarbonate flexi plate (ebay) so at least it wont ever break.....hopefully.
