What is your job?

What is your job and what are your duties? is your job boring or intersting?

Here is what I do I plan stowage for cargo ships, and monitor the loading and discharging operations, it is quite interesting, often dangerous and always different one day from the other. You must be a bit of a dare devil, must not be afraid of heights and you have to be able to trobleshoot difficult stowages and space availabilty always keeping in mind ship stability, crew lives and cargo safety.

Let's hear / see what you do.

Mechanic

I am qualified in two trades, motorcycle (Suzuki & Yamaha) & motor vehicle (Volkswagen Master Tech).

I run a busy motor vehicle workshop for a Volkswagen dealership. I am the workshop foreman, we repair up to 90 motor vehicles a day & generally work a 55 to 60 hour week in 5 days.

I have 2 admin staff, 18 qualified mechanics & 8 apprentices & 1 detailers to look after, as well as the 90 odd customers a day, so I'm quite busy most days.

I am in the Portuguese Military Navy and also studing in university for Social Work. I am still missing one year and a half to finish it and hope to leave the navy at that time. My job is very interesting because in the last 13 years (10 of submarines) i had the oportunity to do a lot of diferent and entusiastic jobs. However it starts to be exausting when we sail to much and the career its not so promissing in the future. So i like it and enjoy a lot but its time to change and get more in touch with society.

I had been working for 7 years on a containers vessels as electronics engineer. Extremly interesting job as I was able to be in touch with latest technology in automation and marine communication systems. But I had to quit due other circumstances and for last 2 years I'm working in my hometown for a small el. company. It can be boring and very interesting at the same time but here I haven't got a big choice to make. Still thinking to go back to sea for a next 2 or 3 years...

midlife crisis 03-09-07 09:18

I help companies sell useless cr@p to people that can neither afford the products nor need them. The recruitment process was basically a mix of assessing low moral ideals, willingness to betray my own sensibilities and the selling of my soul to some red guy in a suit that sits on the 7th floor. On a day to day level, people in suits make un-important and often wrong decisions on stuff they know very little about whilst I oblige diligently until our product looks nothing like it was intended and is about half as good as it's potential.

I work in marketing. I only do it so I can afford the unleaded.

meach 03-09-07 09:23

When i was about 18 i had bought a car and needed to make a bit of money so went across the road from where i then lived to my mates dads tube manipulation factory and asked for a job for a couple of weeks. 17/18 years later virtually running the place it was bought and moved to Halesowen and we were offered jobs or redundancy.
I had always wanted to set up on my own but never had the balls to give up a fairly well paid job to try it but this gave me a kick up the arse to do it. So "bought" some machines off them and moved 100 or so yards down the road to a small unit bending/flaring and manipulating pipes and tubes
2 and a bit years later still here, not making a fortune yet but i get to do whatever i want and i enjoy it (sometimes)

My job title is Asset Controller. I work at a specialist tool hire company which supplies equipment to the UK rail maintenance contractors.

I basically spend most of my time buying in new equipment spending loads of money LOL, setting it up on our fleet management system, ensure all the servicing/maintenance schedules are adopted by our maintenance staff (I was in the workshop for 12 years before my current role). We have loads of regulations we need to ensure we follow which can be a pain.

Still love it after 18 years at the same company.

Work at a private rescue company that operates ambulance and firedeparment services throughout Denmark. It's called Falck (falcon in danish).

My particular job involves dispatching of ambulances and fire trucks. I operate 32 different firedepartments as well as 20 ambulance/rescue stations in the middle region of Denmark. Sounds like a big mouthfull, but it realy isn't that hard once you get the hang of it.

Needless to say, the job can get very frantic on occasions where several accidents/fires happen at the same time in different areas, but a nightshift can also be extremely dull when nothing is happening (this is usually the time when I author some silly question for Kev to answer). I work 12 hour shifts, night or day time, which means that I am just as likely to be off duty on a Sunday as a Tuesday. Which suits my lifestile just fine. I just love comming home from a nightshift on a drizzling Monday morning and watching everyone else hustle off to work, and crawl under the covers to sleep my day away :).

It is a very interesting job and it is my hobby too since i was a student (electrical engineer).
I like it because i have to keep up with new programming techniques and computer languages so it never gets boring.

carlos_mondeos 11-09-07 12:26

I was a decorator for 23 years but gave it up due to the stress levels. I'm now working for a company that makes diesel engine parts. Currently pressure-testing injector headers. Very boring but very stress free (I have to keep telling myself that)

BORING,BORING,BORING, ROOFING. After 20 odd years it would be.

CaptMoto 17-09-07 23:25

A day in the life of a Port Captain...

This is when the ship approaches the lock in Tilbury docks, with two tugs one fore the other aft

Communication starts with the sea pilot exchanging radio messages with the lock pilot. I am then in radio contact with the ship's master who keeps me informed with his current draught (the depth below the water line) We then check the tide is suitable for the draft and radio the lock pilot to be on
stand-by.

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r...7092007299.jpg

The tugs help turning the ship towards the lock entrance
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r...7092007301.jpg

And then the ship is proceeding into the lock.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r...7092007302.jpg

At this point the first line is thrown ashore and the ship is made fast into the lock before the lock doors are shut and the water level is raised.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r...7092007303.jpg

At this time the sea pilot disembark while myself and the lock pilot board the ship via the pilot door.

We then proceed to the bridge
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r...7092007308.jpg

and we take position in our respective places to monitor the ship instruments while the pilot actually steer the ship and directs the engine room.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r...7092007315.jpg
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r...7092007317.jpg

At this point we instruct the lock master and the tugs to take us out of the lock and spin the ship portside so that we can lay the main ramp on the quay.

CaptMoto 18-09-07 09:32

Yes, I am familiar with the MSC line, they do come to Tilbury now and then, they usually dock at berth 39 which is opposite our quay (berth 40 to 42 included).
