Access Database developer

I specialise in Access/Excel/VBA - but I'm trained as a designer (arch) and my background was in university and government admin, which is how I got into IT - automating menial tasks. Hate it - well the large group-think departments I have to work with. I'm thinking of going back into solo design and manufacturing (timber small scale furnishings), oh, I've been a solo designer/maker ... and a Cannondale MTB mechanic .... and bicycle courier ... and ....

School - fail
Stockman - sheep (northern South Oz)
Odd unimportant jobs for railway-building company (Dampier, Western Australia)
Die setter (nasty job)
Delivery driver (scary job - tight schedules)
Motorcycle sales geek
Own m/c parts business (stress and the public...)
Stockman - cattle (Northern Territory)
Shelf filler for supermarket (had to pay the mortgage)
Micro refining (distillation really) - diesel + byproducts (NT: operator, and NSW: site supervisor). Great job, huge hours
Cooling tower refurbisher and office geek
Water leak detector (meters and mains... weird job)
Motorcycle spares geek (nasty job)
Proofreading when I can get it
Mustering contractor - sheep (northern South Oz) Great job, huge hours and dangerous though

But my real reason for being born was to spend almost everything on lots and lots of motorbikes. I have been addicted for fifty years and don't want to be cured, thanks for the offer anyway.

Job

These days I work as a part time parts person in a Motorcycle shop but I was a Project Manager/Process Engineer in the Super Yacht Industry. Started out in 1976 as a Cabinetmaker and moved into boatbuilding in or around 1980. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaay to stressful though. Rather play with bikes.
Last Project before getting out was "MY Amadeus"

Bilerbill56 16-04-13 16:22

What's my line????

I've worked for a major UK Telecomms company for over 30 years. I have been an exchange builder, back in the last days of Strowger, a diagnostic technicain, field engineer, asbestos recoveries and general building works clerk of works, small works planner, facilities engineer at a 1200 seat call centre, commercial relationship manager and now I'm a special projects manager.
I project manage short to medium term projects currently including deployment of permanently installed fall arrest systems on the high radio tower estate and the annual towers painting project.
I have an office in a small room at home and only visit the main office once a week for people management duties of a small team of draughtsmen.
Occaisionally I get out on site to resolve problems, devise solutions and monitor quality.
I moved to Scotland because most of our towers are up here. Usually a drive to a tower involves anything from a few hundred yards to several miles of poorly surfaced tarmac or gravel road - which is why I have a land Rover Freelander as my daily drive. The bike isn't insured for more than commuting to one regular location (so that'll be the glasgow office) and anyway, to climb a tower I need to carry about 30lbs of PPE....although I have on odd occaisions used the bike in the summer if I'm going to an easy site.
There are a few towers where there is no road, so that'll be a walk in or exceptionally a helicopter.

Been with the same company since I left school 27 years ago and worked my way up from an apprentice welder fabricator.

Work in malware defence for large enterprise. If you only knew what's out there...not pretty.

Do I like fighting the bad guys? Yes, some, but it would be better if we won every so often.

lonepilgrim 15-05-13 12:07

I work in forensics for a national police force here in the UK as a Crime Scene Manager (CSI Supervisor) - great job and almost every day is different but doesn't often provide much appropriate dinner party conversation. Only downside as with front line public sector jobs I am on a shift pattern with many weeks of 24/7 call out rota

My current job is a Power Station Operator in a coal fired station in the south west of Western Australia.
Originally started as a mechanical fitter in power stations, refineries and a bit of pipe fitting/welding.
Its a great job with new things to learn all the time, especially since nearly everthing is electrically/computer controlled and everything is great until something goes wrong.
Shift roster is 2 nights, 2 days 5 off

Currently I am a Managing Director working for Audatex (owns HPI in the UK). We provide business management solutions for insurance companies, claims management, fraud detection and prevention. We also work closely with all OEMs (mostly cars).
My background though is from the Automotive sector having worked for several years for Inchcape, another UK company, covering various fields from sales and dealer development to product management. Later I moved to another company in the sector as Marketing Director.
Through the years I have built a good industry knowledge and last but not least had a lot of fun driving countless new cars from any brand.
This is in few lines more than 17 years of experience.

Was a Carpenter for 18yrs 'till I got tired of the building trade.
Moved to Oz in '06 bought a Picture Framing & Art Material Business (which we still have) wife now runs the shop while I cruise around Central Queensland driving a Fuel Tanker that I really enjoy.
I think it stems from my childhood where Convoy was my favorite movie, but man I was pissed when my sister taped Grease over it in the good old days of VHS video recorders.

Just like a Mountain Bike Tour Guide once said " Do what you love & you will never 'work' a day in your life"

Cheers Ken

Porn Star!

Errr.... No, that was just in my dream. :catfight:

I am a proces operator at a nuclear power-plant. Original a ships engineer, but came to be a proces operator in a coal operated power plant. Unfortunately in Holland the so-called "green" liars want to have all coal plants closed, they succeeded with the one i worked for, so took my chance to switch to the only still operational nuclear plant remaining in Holland. Procedures, procedures, procedures, but apart from that it is still interesting.

its not bad but not the job I'm dreaming of.

maybe within a couple years I'll be looking to start my own riding school or at least do a job where I can do more working with my hands instead of mind

I am a freelancer special effects assistant since 1999.
We do things like rain, snow(Snow Business materials), wind, fire, smoke & mist effects and more.
Mostly for tvc and rarely for movies, movies/films in Greece are way low budget..
Now days I also do some extras as a production assistant because of economical crises.

Guess this thread is a bit on the old side but while it lasts atleast want to not be a stranger or hermit so well i totaly did 7 years of high school as a welder at age off 18/19 i worked for 1,5 years at friend of my uncle great pay it was 200 to 300 a day but long hours and it was also not registered so while i was collecting bank the goverment thought i was just sitting around doing nothing great stuff if only after that i wasted it all on a dangerous thing and that is being blind to a problem and love so wasted a year in spain doing nothing for real living with british poeple totaly culture shock really...a belgian/half german guy dating their daughter they werent really fond of me lets just say that but oh well thats all in the past now since this year i work at a factory called Van hool. Travelers using coaches alllt or truck drivers might have seen or remember it seeing they are known for making great vehichles of transportation and trailes and well wat do i do there i got put at the one place in the factory i wasent expecting and that is building the biggest heaviest and most important parts of the whole asembly like wheel axles to or what i make is a gigantic 500kg turning plate that get fitted on new bus trains in germany or any other bus having more than just one car attached to it nice job but no errors can be made on these it could be dangerous and even lethal where these to break or even tear due to the amount off weight it has to endure for a full waranty of 15years so wow better make sure i quit in 14 years 😂😂

Flaggi 27-08-18 07:50

Wow, i completely missed this thread so here we go.

I started out as a mechanic for Mitsubishi and Hyundai, after a few years we lost the contract with Hyundai due to another company getting exclusive rights for the brand.
The revenue was nolonger enough to keep all the staff wich in turn made me decide to start shifting towards IT business while restoring cars in my own workshop to get around.

Since 15years back now I'm running two companies, a hobbyshop with RC models and an IT service store/shop.
In parallell with this I'm working with SMB/Enterprise sales for a global company called ESET.
