Bash Plate

I have been looking around for a load of things for the XT660R for when i finally get one and have seen alot of mixed reviews about bash plates and which to go for. I plan not to get a 2 into 1 exhaust so need a bash plate they will fit around the stock exhausts. Also when looking at the reviews alot of them say they also cover the water pump but does yours really?

At the moment i am sort of looking at the large touratech one as it is massive and seems to cover near all the engine but is expensive.

So what bash plate you got and how good is it? any pictures?

No pics yet

I've ordered, but not yet fitted, the large one at offtheroad.de. I'll post a pic when I get it.

I've ordered quite a lot of stuff and to be honest, I'm getting a bit miffed with my namesake at OTR. Called him for the third time last monday and he said there was a delay because of the painters holiday (this was in reference to the tanks). But he would send the whole thing either that day or the day after. He said I'd get a mail when the order was sent. Still haven't recieved a mail :Christo_pull_hair: . Ordered the tanks, bashplate, windshield, crahsbars and hand protectors.

As for the bashplate covering the waterpump; it ofcourse doesn't cover it as in encasing it. But you can clearly see on the model photo that it extends out to the sides so much, that if you lay your bike down the bike will rest on the side of the bashplate, and not the waterpump. The small stock Yamaha skidplate only protects the exhaust pipes and leaves the rest of the engine ungaurded in a crash. But to be completely sure, you'll need engine crashbars. Bear in mind, that if you are getting a '07 model with the lambda probe, you'll need to either move the lambda or go with a 2in1 solution (which you are).

I'll ofcourse post pictures of the bike when I have it fully fitted. And also some detailed photos of each item. Plan to make a whole photoserie of me mounting the extra large tanks. I'm told it's rather hard to make it fit and work properly.

cheers for the quick reply

I have looked at the offtheroad bash plate and it seems good but as yet havent heard much about it ie reviews of any kind. ie how good is it, was it easy to fit, is it really designed properly to protect your bike for what you bought it for?

I am at the moment not thinking of putting on crash bars (i think like you Mcthor) as 1, some of the bash plates say you cant fit both and 2 cause if i get a good enough bash plate it should do both and 3 cost. This is the reason i would like a large bash plate to cover the water pump and like Mcthor said not to cover it while the bike is up right but when laid on its side, ie if i had fallen over the bash plate will be on the ground and the water pump will be protected.

I see offtheroad do a protector for the pump but it looks a bit point less more of a money making item really.

I have seen one person had the large TT bash plate and was wondering what he thinks of it? how long did it take him to recieve it? (heard TT has a big bad log of work) as its so big had any cooling probelms with the bike?

Read that most of the bash plates (bar the yamaha) are mostly made from 3-4mm thick aluminium that should protect the exhaust/engine from getting any heavy knocks or smashs. But then what wiegh are most of these bash plates? I know its not really gonna matter when fully loaded just a thought.

xterror 19-08-07 14:18

I got mine from www.kedo.de. It looks good, its thick enough and its quite cheap compared to otr. I dont have any complaints yet, it does its job well. One annoying thing is noise, aluminium plate rebounces engine and chain noise upwards right to your ears.

maxwell123455 19-08-07 16:00

Xterror

i have tried this site before as i saw you had it in a thread before this, but yet i still can fit it on the site. I dont know wheather they have taken it off, miss placed it or what. If possible could you give me a link to the correct page please.

Eiter that or i am stupid!!!!:eusa_eh:

dazzerrtw 19-08-07 19:11

I have the TT one fitted to my XT and it took some very big hit's when off roading in Spain.
It saved the engine and water pump housing getting damaged that's for sure.:blob10:

xterror 19-08-07 22:14

You can find it by typing 40085 to the box that says "artikelsuche". At www.kedo.com and their online catalog.

I've also just added the Metal Mule radiator grille which is great (other than the new bolts appearing to be too short ? - weird !)

I went for the off-the-road.de bash plate. It was slow in arriving taking a good month or more but it is very heavy duty and large so it will provide some good protection all around the underside/front.

Fixing is easy...they provide a couple of pillars that screw into the mounting positions under the engine, towards the rear. The front end is held by a bracket that uses one of the engine mounting bolts. I have to say it wasn't immediately apparent which way up this bracket needed to go when fixing it to the bash plate or, indeed, which of the engine mounting bolts it's going to use when you offer it up to the bike. Despite my small amount of confusion it only took about 10 minutes to fit.

Now the downside...
I've found the bash plate acts as a bit of a sound board and with a thumping single attached to it it has made the engine noise much more pronounced...so much so that I removed it prior to my trip last week to France to keep the noise levels down.
I'm wondering if this is a problem with all (decent sized) bashplates? I'm just thinking about finding some rubber blocks to mount between the engine and bash plate to dampen the vibrations caused by the engine and thus reduce the noise.

Completely off topic...the Scottoiler I fitted is genius and I recommend them to everyone here :icon_lol:

maxwell123455 19-08-07 23:09

cheers for that xterror

Now finding out that the kedo bash plate is only 70E (euros) is a good thing but i still think it is a little small but i could maybe try and extend it by placing some extra protection on just to cover the water pump as an extra procaution.

At the moment i am in between wheather to go for the cheaper option (I am a student and still havent got the bike yet) like the kedo which still looks strong enough but maybe not as big as i would like or to go all out and get the TT large which looks as if you could bomb it and it would still come back for more but costs around 120 (pounds).

Steve, how long ago did you buy your sump guard? The pic on the Kedo website seems to have a slightly wider sump guard that gives the water pump more protection. I wonder if they have altered their design..?

stevechol 23-08-07 17:50

Hi. I bought it around 3 months ago. Not sure if they've altered it or not.

I've emailed them to find out. Cheers.

please keep us up dated on wheather they have up dated it or not. Still seems a good price over over the TT but still dont know wheather it could take massive hits like what the TT one looks like it could take.

Techno Prisoners 24-09-07 23:11

re: the vibrations from your sump guard; have a look at this special foam used by motocrossers to keep mud from the gap between engine case and bash plate. I believe it can also cut down annoying vibes.

They look very much like the scrubbing pads that the cook should use when washing up:eusa_whistle: , never done it so...... Any way i think you can get them alot cheaper in some supermarket stores maybe. Worked beside an asda for 2 summers never went in for cleaning stuff.

However the price is waaaaay different. It makes sense buy it from Kedo!

maxwell123455 06-10-07 18:53

Right i have just been looking over this thread and have desided that i will now buy the kedo as i have just got meself an XTR. Anyone dealed with these guys lately? or at all? Did the sending take long? and i have noticed that they have 2 different types of bash plates up as pictures for one item which one is the one i am buying??

maxwell123455 09-10-07 22:26

I could possibly be talking to myself here but hay we are all a bit crazy anyway:hae18: . I emailed kedo and found out that it is the right picture bash plate style i am getting for XT's bashplate as they dont do the left hand style picture any more (look at website link). Anyway i have just ordered the bashplate and a total of around 85E about 60 not too bad but will have to see on how good the workmanship is. Any way will keep you's informed of what happens and post some pictures later when i get it and fitted

Got the bash plate about 2 weeks ago and put it on. It does look nice and stops alot of the road crud gettin up in under the engine but as mentioned before you do notice the echo of it being there. Being a engineering mind i thought i would see what some home made rubber washers would do and they are brilliant. Stop all but the wee dinking in the back round. And after some faffing about here is a link to my bebo page where you will find some photos mid page on the right of the XTR with bash plate.

Hope you like

Started noticing humming sound today. When I put my hand on the bashplate, the humming went away. Strange I didnt hear this sound before. The sound is strange to explain, its sounds like an empty glass bottle in a windy day :) youknow, the humming you can do also with your mouth. this is really really annoying... maybe the sound was there before but i was just too busy listening to my OTR exhaust :)

At first I thought a some kind of engine bearing is giving excess vibrations and soon my engine will stall or something. glad I found this thread.

I think I'll use some large rubber washers instead of the metallic ones I have at the moment.

I hope that somebody here has experienced the exact same sound and I can sleep fine again :) Because I really love my XTR and I want it to work another 100 000 km :)

bonjo 06-03-10 20:00

Yamaha in the end

I looked at various options for my needs:
protection from mud & gravel our considerate farmer spray on the tarmac
protection from grit that is ankle deep in winter months
protection from mud & flying stones when light green laning

touratech & equivalent: too expensive, bulky, ugly looking & OTT for my needs
Yamaha: goes well with the look of the bike, wide enough to protect the pump, well designed & engineered & well prices.
It won't protect the engine as well if you hit a rock, but I don't intend to do that anyway

InkaJoe 06-03-10 20:36

here's my DIY solution:

http://picasaweb.google.com/torque62/Umbauten#

it works fine for me, i used rubber grommets to avoid the noise.

saludos,
Joe

bonjo 06-03-10 20:58

look very nice pal

I must say look wise, I much prefer it to the non Yamaha products. It is not too loud.
You must be very resourceful to have designed & made it yourself. Very impressed.
I had to buy something off the shelf.
All the fixing bolts on Yamaha unit are through thick rubber spacer/ washer which I guess is to dampen vibration. There is also a heavy duty adaptor which fits to where a center stand would be and the guard is attached to this plate

I went for the Touratech small. It was easy to fit once you organise the bolts to see what goes where (the instructions were in German only). It's really well made and looks great!
