How do you mean "sideways"?

richard 05-08-07 20:19

i can pull the sprocket and that what it is bolted to towards me.or towards you if your kneeling in front of the back wheel were the sprocket is located ..i can wigle it back and forth..does that help:thumbsup[1]:

Richard you can only tell if your rear wheel bearing are worn if, once the wheel and the spindle are fitted in place and tightly bolted to the correct torque, you are still able to get a play from side to side on your tightened wheel. If you get lateral movement the bearings are worn.

AJT690KTM 05-08-07 23:22

If you face the wheel and you can pull and push the sprocket and carrier towards and away from you then there is a problem, it is unlikely to be the wheel bearings though, that would show up as movement in the wheel, ie , grab the tyre and the wheel would rock about the spindle. What you are describing does not sound like that, how much does it move?

Kev 05-08-07 23:37

There is a single ball bearing race in the sprocket hub, this bearing can have a small amount of side ways play this is normal as it is not a roller bearing type, but should not have any play in the direction of the chain is pulled.

If the side ways movement is excessive you would need to replace the hub bearing. Also check the rear wheel bearings as well for movement before removing the rear wheel. There are 3 bearings in the back wheel, 1 sprocket & 2 wheel bearings.

Order a new bearing before removing the wheel.

Remove rear wheel, remove sprocket hub by lifting it off the wheel, knock out the old bearing & knock in new bearing.

richard 06-08-07 12:37

that sounds easy thanks kev:041:

2 Attachment(s)
Bearing & part number. I would also change the seal no 8.

As a XT660.com supporter, you will always get the one on one help from the Tec department.

Hi Richard,

Did you sort this out? What was the final problem?

Regards

Paul

Just had the same wobbly rear sprocket problem richard had in the start of this thread and was wondering has any one else had this problem yet??

looking at ordering the parts myself and fixing it but because its the hoildays i cant get in contact with my yammy dealer so were did everyone else get theres?

Mines happened at 22k miles, and i already had to replace the right hand side rear wheel bearing at about 14k miles as it had become dried out (i was told its cause i must have blown out the grease but never went too close so must have been the previous owner).

tsokasn 28-12-08 19:07

I was wondering if anyone has the bearings dimensions(for all the three of them)
Thank's!

Kev 28-12-08 22:49

Sorry mate I do not have the sizes, remove your back wheel & knock out the bearings to get the numbers & sizes.

Please let us once you get them.

tsokasn 29-12-08 16:59

Sure thing Kev.I am trying to find some free time(and the temperature to rise a bit...)to change chain/spockets,inner tube the dampers, replace the oil filter, check the oil level and fit a main stand!!!(I like it a lot!!!)

maxwell123455 29-12-08 17:08

Just ordered the sprocket bearing and oil seal but its the same old story

"oh we dont have that in stock at the moment, would you like me to order it in"

"yes"

"its gonna be at least until after new years + standard 3-4 days waiting time"

great, so the bikes up on the bike stand and having to have some time off untill i can get the parts.

Why is it that Yamaha over here in Belfast Northern Ireland never stock any parts? Is it the same any where else in the UK?

It would be nice to have the bearing sizes...
I'd like to replace them, and I think that it'll come cheaper if they're not boutgh from Yamaha. Just a guess...

Let us know...

These are the SKF part numbers for the XT660Z - they may or may not be the same for the other XTs, but it will help any Tenere owners reading this I imagine...

Genuine Yamaha bearings are a horrfic price. The advice I have had is that SKF are best quality. Here are the part no's you need.

Ok,I would like to wake up this post because I once sayed that I will change my wheel bearings.
That time came two weeks ago and I faced a problem...

How am I going to get the rear wheel's bearings of the hub???

There is a spacer between the two bearings that prevents a common bearing extractor to pull them out...
I must take them out in order to measure them...(although I had a chance to measure them but I want to be sure before I announce any dimensions)
Any suggestions?(the same thing must go for the front wheel I believe)

Tony660x 25-09-09 20:38

I would pop the seals out and then tap out the wheel bearing using the tool in the attachment. (Second attachment is just for illustration purposes)

tsokasn 29-09-09 20:45

My friend Tony, there is no room (from the inner side of the bearing) for that tool to push the bearing because of the spacer.
Unless I am thinking a wrong way.

As an aside, before you install the wheel bearings pick off the seal and put in some more wheel bearing grease. I usually use a small fine screw driver and take the seal off at the centre. The bearings usually come with a minimum of grease in them. Press the seal back on and you're good to go. Before you put them in,put them in the freezer for about 20 mins and before you install them pour boiling water from the kettle onto the hub...this'll expand same meaning they'll either drop in nicely or just need slightly tapped in(using a socket as a drift...the same size as the exterior diameter)

The dust seals can be found usually,if you take one in to a large farm supplies place. My last ones were 3.50 each. I usually put grease in these too.
