Any foreseen issues with this?

I think I may have solved my trashed engine / 3rd gear problem having taken the plunge and bought an Aprilia Factory (means nothing I’m sure) Pegaso 660 engine, with 5000 miles on it. Has anyone changed (chanced their luck) by fitting this engine (Yamaha unit) in to the Tenere?. I know, in theory, they’re the same unit , although the Aprilia one is black and has a logo’d clutch cover, but it should bolt straight in...please say yes.

I’m looking for any tips. My 1st guess might be the sensor cables the Aprilia loom uses, couplings, might be different in which case I’ll swap my Tenere ones out as far as I can. In one Aprilia review I read Aprilia have “breathed” on the engine to give a different power delivery, although vital stats still compare at 48 ish BHP and similar torque.

I'll post pictures in a few weeks when the lump arrives.

Same engine is it not?..ALSO fits in the MZ varient too..

My '03 MZ Baghira 660 had a carburettor not fuel injection, I also think production finished in '05, so never had quite the same engine spec as the Pegaso or XT, hopefully it will be pretty much the same, good luck.

Theres a huge difference between the XTZ660 engine(3YF) and the XT660Z engine(11D): first is 5-valve and last is 4-valve. The 3YF engine is used in the MZ bikes, so can not be used in the 11D Tenere(I think!?).

I assumed the op had done some research into the engine before buying it.

Without year of manufacture/engine number etc its all guesswork.

Im looking forward to the progress and pictures.

Thanks dallas / nikroc. My humble apologies, I should have made it clearer. My original engine is a 2009 fuel injected lump, that has an engine number falling squarely in the 'ticking bomb' range.

As a mini update, I had complete scare when I thought the Aprilia unit I'm buying may have different sized bushings / sleeves where the swinging arm shaft goes through as part of the engine support. This would be a complete pain as it would mean completely stripping the 5000 mile Aprilia unit and machine pressing the bushings out of the split crankcases of both engines and swapping them.

I had a couple of hours checking the yamaha part numbers for its swinging arm components against Aprilia's schematics and parts hoping to get any clues.

The Aprilia swinginarm shaft is described as D16, which I guessed would mean 'diameter 16mm' which is in fact the same diameter as the Yamaha shaft.

Then it dawned on me to simply ask the seller of the Aprilia unit to measure the engine's shaft hole. His reply was 16mm. Could have saved myself a lot of time by engaging brain first. Scare over.

I too will be an interested spectator, from my experience Yamaha’s of a certain age are parts bin specials various bits may have difference part numbers from model to model only to find its the same part.

That idea went down the tube when bought TT600r which was made in Italy and had nothing in common with anything and when I realised how deep the mud and alligators were it got shipped off to Southern Ireland very quickly.

The Pegaso wheels that I recently fitted in my XT i’d Considered straight forward on the basis it had an XT engine and also turned into a major ball ache hopefully you’ll get lucky.

.
Delivery was expensive (50 kg) but funnily enough I bought the complete unit from Dubrovnik on ebay.com not ebay.uk, using the search term 'pegaso 660 engine'....The freight company has been organised although it's not been dispatched yet (only bought it a couple of days ago). I guess it'll be upto 4 weeks.

Waynovetten. I'll do some progress pics as soon as it arrives.
