Adventure Spec Bash plate faults

Hi all,

So when I got my Tenere 2~ years ago I fitted an Adventure Spec bash plate since it looked like the best one on the market and offered some pretty decent water pump protection.

Now I want to preface this by saying that I've never crashed this bike at speed. I've dropped it a number of times off road, but I've never had the full weight of the bike on the bash plate. I've dropped it once on the road at about 5ish MPH but thats it.

I would expect a bash plate of this style (and cost!) to be able to easily take the above impacts, however I went to service my Tenere today and I took the bashplate off so it'd be easier to drain the oil. Upon undoing the bashplate front mount bolt I found the following had occurred:

Now, obviously I can just go and weld this piece back on, and I will, but I'm a bit peeved that I spent 230 on a bash plate only for a major support to break with no major impact occurring. Has anybody else had this happen? I'm going to email Adventure Spec and see what they say about it.

Not a happy bunny! :director:

Yep that's the same place that mine cracked. I do have my own MIG welder so repaired it sucessfully, but the alloy brackets at the rear are also badly designed. YOU DO NOT BEND ALUMINIUM and expect it to be strong. I have had mine repaired once and it has fractured again. I will be taking off the alloy plate and making some stainless angle brackets to replace the feeble alloy ones.
The bike gets a ringing at certain speeds which prompted me to have a look at what was wrong. I actually took my bike for a service to a garage once when I was busy and he couldnt track down the fractured bracket so he jammed some foam between the crank cases and the bash plate and sprayed it black! I will not use him again!
Best of luck with AS!

Well good luck with adventurespec, i had mine break at the rear alloy mounts. I made a stainless mount and rivetted it onto the alloy its lasted much longer than the standard setup. I called in as its only 10 mins from my house and was basically told because it had been used offroad that i had broken it and there was nothing they could do. Why would you fit a bashplate if not for offroad use?? The guy could clearly see it wasnt a BMW GS :043:

I asked them if they would sell me a replacement alloy plate, nope. Had to buy a full new guard. They wernt very helpful.
I also called in last week to buy a new klim lid. Basically told me they wernt a shop and i had to leave and had too buy online. I was stood in reception. Wouldnt even let me try one on for size. So i left money in pocket :violin:

I also hit a large rock a few months back that bent the steal tube into my clutch cover, smashing it. Im sure i would have done much more damage if it wasnt fitted bht i was still disapointed it didnt take the hit.

Ive also had to wedged a lump of neoprene between mine and my sump to stop it ringing like a bell on the motorway.

It came on the bike so ill live with it till it dies. Then ill make my own :drool[1]:

These aren't good endorsements for AdventureSpec.

My xt came with one fitted however it was grey so I took it off over the winter to paint it up. Now I've never had the bike off road and there is no damage on the bike to suggest it's ever had a fall off road, one of the grey plastics on the side has a graze as if it's touched the wall but that's it.
On taking the plate off not only was there are crack at the same point as yours as split but along the front tube there was complete separation

I had been looking at getting one of these. Think I will pass for now.

Not impressed with the tubing / welds etc given the price new ....it's the best looking bash plate for sure but I'd want it to be super strong for the price . Steve

I use these guys for my R.
The bash plate has taken a real hammering and still holding fine.

John, I'm with you on this one. I was actually working for Dave from Adv Spec when my knees went! I do know him quite well and have bought literally thousands of pounds worth of goods from them in the past and I have taken mates to them to get gear. But not any more, they are too big for their boots now. I got a similar rebuff when I needed some more trousers. I wanted to try some out frst asI wanted Klim agin, but NO you cannot come here anymore. I went to the Adv bke warehouse at Manchester area and got really good service.
As for the bash plate I am fortunate to be able to weld and reapair myself.
Adv spec can take a running jump.
Steve

PS John I need someone to do a bit of offroad leading when I do the rally at Dent 29th July, your prescence would be appreciated. PM me pleeeeeeease:icon_wink:
