Xt660z playing up, electrical problem

Hi all, I have a 2010 xt660z, the other day I left the bike in the rain, so as I started it the Ecu fuse blew(third from top) I left it out to dry for the day and it was fine the next day and rode it to work, after work I did about 50km and the fuse blew again, after that it wouldn't start up... I've tested the relay assy which I thought was the problem and I'm out of ideas... Any thought?

Have you used the bikes diagnostic process accessed through the onboard display?...

How do I access it on the 2010 model, I tried but to no avail... When I hold the buttons it doesn't switch over to diog mode...

Firstly, I assume you are not getting any fault codes on the engine trouble light? Secondly, I take it you are referring to the 10A 'injection' fuse #5? (Fuse numbers are read from left to right.) I take it the ignition works and the dash/idiot lights come on? Is the pump priming with the ignition on? Have you got a spark?

The most likely cause of your problem is the wiring to the fuel injector under the tank. It has an annoying habit of rubbing through on the top left frame rail on earlier Z models (later ones had a rubber pad fitted to the frame). The symptoms are pretty much as you describe and initially are worse in wet weather as the moisture 'helps' any short get to ground. This problem does not always flag up an error code either; it just causes intermittent or no running and blown fuses. (The HT and LT connections on the coil also suffer from water ingress and cause intermittent running and/or a non-starter in the wet, but neither would cause fuse 5 to blow.)

Here's a photo which shows the problem area with the injector wiring/loom and the pad I have fitted to mine to keep the loom off the frame.

Start with this. Whip the tank off and check this area and, while youre at it, any other iffy looking connectors or abraded wires.

And, yes - You cannot access diagnostics through the dash on a Z. You need a plug in FI diagnostic tool like this:

Which plugs in here:

That was so helpful, your long message wasn't In vein. I will have a look under the tank as soon as I have time. Those symptoms are exact, only thing is on my manual it says it's the ecu fuse... Third from the left, and the dealership says I should be running a 20 amp fuse, I smashed a 25 in there and it blew the main fuse, engine turns over and fuel injector does prime, the fuse doesn't blow when I take the main relay assy off, while engine on I really connect it and it's fine, as soon as I try start it the fuse blows. Spark is all well too...
