Super moto wheels and no cushdrive.
Hi guys, my bike has had many modifications since i got it. And is exceptional in every way. (although i may be biased hehe) but after a few ride outs with super moto buddies i struggle to stick with them in the twisties. Even on road tyres. The front just doesnt feel planted.
Ive got an ohlins shock. And WP fork conversion, all dialled in. So can alter steering angles ride height etc. Im blaming the large front wheel and skinny rear. So im thinking i might put in some supermoto wheels just too see what happens. I googled and found an xt660z on xt660x wheels in and it looked awsome but all information was in potugese. Ive got a set of wheels allready, husaberg 450 hubs, excel rims, the front is a direct fit for my WP fork conversion. (Awsome) The rear i can make fit, But................. It doesnt have a cush drive. Will this kill my allready abused, (trailer hauling, offroaded, jumped) gearbox, or is the cushdrive more for rider comfort and smooth power delivery rather than gearbox preservation. Because I plan ahead ive ordered an xt660x rear wheel too. Im asuming this will drop straight in. Looks like it will. Watch this space. |
My XR650R in Supermoto form has no cush drive....but as you say the Ten is designed with one. Talon do a hub with cush drive. I've thought about doing this....was thinking about a 19 inch front in order to get a bit more rubber down up front. As the rear is already a 17 how about lacing a wider rim onto the Tenere hub...you could then fit the widest tyre, (swing arm permitting ), that would solve the cush drive problem ...not being very helpful I'm afraid, just throwing some ideas in . Initially I missed that planted front end of the XR , but as confidence increased I find myself getting braver on the Tenere . I'm selfishly hoping you do this as I would love to see what the Tenere looks and handles like in SMOTO form!. Steve

I used to have an XR650r supermoto and was also considering fitting moto wheels to the Ten, then a decent XTX caught my eye, it arrives on Friday, saves me swapping wheels I suppose, be interesting to see how the two compare though.

Loved this bike, some lowlife tried to steal it from where I used to work, so had to sell it to buy a car as I didn't want to leave a bike there anymore ( think it had a lot to do with security tipping people off)

Nice stoppie a big supermoto. :thumbsup[1]: theiving gets im glad they never got their mitts on it. Ive thought. About lacing a supermoto rim too my Ten hub but i want my wheel with a knobblie on ready to swap.
Thats the same picture i saw of the SuperM Ten The xt660x wheel ive ordered (ebay italy) looks like it same hub as tenere, so should slot right in with the excel rim can put a massive tire on. Theres lots of room in the ten swingarm. But the yam wheels weigh a ton, berg wheels are much lighter. Ill get pics up this weekend if it all goes together. Ill let you know if i can scrape them pegs :thumbsup[1]: |
The wider back wheel with a Knobbie tyre on may also help with sand riding. I saw a DRZ 400 SM with Knobbie tyres on, it did look a bit of a tractor but had a fair bit of surface rust as if it had been used on the beach.
The skinny tyres on the Ten are great for mud to cut through to the hard grippy stuff but could sink into sand. There's more sand riding around here than mud. Fatter tyres would help stay on the top of the sand, remember those 3 wheel Honda's with balloon tyres you could have a ride on at the beach till they were banned for tipping over to much? Plus if the X's wheel fits it would be a great way of getting a gold rim on the back of Ten without having to use the narrower 120 excel rim's Good luck with the project. |
PS......don't forget your speedo will be out if your on a 17 front....Steve
|
Its a lieing ******* anyway steve ;-) thinks its much quicker than it actually is.
On a tangent i thouught it was gearbox driven as i have ktm front end and no speedo conections. |
Think it does run off the gearbox, so shouldn't make any difference
|
I was speaking to Central wheels at the dirt bike show and he said they where in the process of making hubs for the Tenere, and expected them to be ready around now, might be worth a call, but can't see them being cheap
|
That sounds interesting! An alternative to the Talon hubs?
What is their purpose for making hubs for the Tenere? |
Not sure on there reasoning why, but they already do a rear hub, and we're working on a front, probably for peeps wanting lighter sets of wheels

Soooooooo, I went ahead and did it, front wheel from a Husaberg and rear from an X, sticky goldspeed supermoto tires.
And here it is. You get a standard (ish) Tenere http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/t...psnb6crtte.jpg Add a pair of these http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/t...psjiv0msqe.jpg You go too work and in your dinner hour have a muck about and you end up with something like this (please ignore very untidy workshop) http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/t...pszezrctxj.jpg http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/t...pscsg6lrg6.jpg 160/60/17 rear http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/t...psxtclw5qb.jpg 120/? /17 front. Just fits http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/t...psmkjemedw.jpg A few notes from the experience. Xt660x wheel drops.straight in the back. This thing is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! My headlight is now useless beyond adout 20ft My sidestand is almost useless.unless you find a hole to park near. This thing is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! It handles very well, loads of confidence in the front end. Endless grip it seems. I will be trying for some peg down action soon as the roads dry up a little. If you are only going too ride on tarmac this may be the mod for you. Only annoying thing is, is that its taken me 3 years too think of it and do it. Thanks for looking. AWESOME. |
Hi, how was the fork conversion?..I know they are wp, but was it hard work?..cheers jo
|
It was pretty straight forward. Buy KTM 640 sm forks WP 4860, (stiffer springs that are good for the Tenere). Only 265 mm travel as apposed too 300mm.
Buy a left hand fork bottom from a 2005 model exc and crowns and wheel and brake, swap the fork bottom for the exc one. Press out the ktm steerer and press in the tenere one. Both 30mm crown fittment, but the ktm one runs imperial bearing sizes at the bearing seats. Reassemble the steering system with only one of the castleated nuts, you will have too make/buy a small top hat spacer to take up the difference in steerer dia to top crown bore. Simples :book1: |
Great job on the SM conversion....good to hear it handles well. Any difference to the gearing with the smaller front. ?. I just can't stop smiling when I see the tow hitch on your Tenere!!. Try and head down for the Anniversary meet. Steve

Love it :D

Cheers Jon..

Gearing has changed a little Steve, I nearly always have a knobbly in the rear so its dropped a little dia from to the SM tire. Ive noticed around 5mph difference at same revs.
My fuel guage has also become even less optimistic. I was considering the Anniversary gathering but im away on a trail riding weekend in Northumberland the same weekend. But maybe later in the year ill try too get together with a few people for a camp. Jo75 if your seriously tbinking about doing the fork conversion drop me your email via pm and ill help however i can. I can certainly press your steerers in and out, and make the top hat spacer you will need. If needs be bring it all round to my workshop and ill help you fit it all. Been out all night on it. Such a giggle, needs a few tweaks as on tight corners the front tucks under a little, im going too lower the rear to slacken the head angle out a touch and add some compression and rebound to the forks. No peg down yet but itll lean way further than my bottle will allow haha |
Same goes for anyone else thats thibking of doing the WP fork conversion. bigwink

Is it possible to get a picture or 2 of the swingarm gap with the xt660x wheel n the 160/60 tire? Would a 5 inch rim fit in? since the xt660x runs a 4.25inch rim. |
