Is there a way of checking my cooling fan is working without sitting with bike running for ages. I can't say I've ever known it cone on.

Or pull the wires from the fan and connect straight to battery.

It doesn't take long to reach temperature to turn fan on. Couple minutes or so idling, at least in a warm climate that's how long it takes.

NO. Not unless you plug in a Yamaha diagnostic tool.

The diagnostic function is not built into the XTZ dash, unlike the R/X models.

Diagnostic code 51 checks the cooling fan realay and wiring.

For entering R/X diagnostic mode see this thread:

FYI: Riding throughout the year in normal UK weather the fan on my Z only cuts in on the hottest summer days and even then only when I'm stuck in stationary traffic for more than a minute or two. In normal riding it never comes on.

I shouldn't worry too much that you've never heard it come on.
