Problem with fitting metal mule exhaust
Hi folks,
A while ago I bought a MM 2-1 exhaust system and only just recently fitted it. To get around the hot pipe near leg problem I heat wrapped the front pipes. No matter what I do the link pipe just touched the frame where it goes through behind your ankle and up to the silencer. Has anyone else had this problem?? Should I just ignore it and just ride? In addition to this the front pipe is touching the engine casing at the front where the oil filter housing is. Now that could be the thickness of the heat wrap. When I look at the Metal Mule website I see that there own picture shows virtually a few millimetres of clearance on their own bike. I am interested to hear any comments from others out there???:dontknow: |

I was looking at mine today and the link pipe touches the frame as well. If I slacken off the clamp and the silencer straps it doesn't touch but tightening it all up pulls it against the frame. It's worse actually as the tyre touches the silencer when the suspension is compressed so a spacer is needed between the straps and frame to push it over which is what then makes the link pipe touch the frame.
In fact I came to the conclusion today that the whole Metal Mule pipe is pretty crap actually: first the link pipe touches the frame; second it looks like there is a ding in the pipe where the rear brake caliper has touched the silencer; third there is a small mark on the swing arm where that touched the link pipe (needs to completely bottomed out but it it touches both); and fourth the clamp for the link pipe/silencer is the cheap version with a mild Steel bolt, firmly rusted in place. I wish I hadn't bothered with the Metal Mule stuff. The wife's bike with Akrapovics and a TT sump guard is loads better. Sent from my iPhone with a smile :) |

I have to agree that its a pretty badly designed system. They are basically putting an exhaust where there isnt room for one. Another thing is why is one of the headers longer than the other. Surely that isnt good! Anyhow, I took the blasted thing off last night as I need to weld some lugs on it to attach a heatguard as the old one was damaged by the previous owner. I had originally fitted the system with heatwrap on the front pipe section. What a mistake that was!! Maybe in California where the sun shines most of the time. However, on my trip to Scotland a few weeks ago the pipe looked like it had been wrapped in a soggy and muddy bandage. NEVER AGAIN!!! By the way, the method I used to get the pipe to "just clear the frame was by first attaching the front right hand header securely so the pipe ran clear. Then the silencer using the rear mount only. I then cranked the pipe away from the frame using a ratchet strap. Then I tightened the rest of it. What a blooming palaver!! Regarding the clearance of the brake caliper Metal Mule supply the pipe with 15mm spacers. Did you get these or did you buy the exhaust second hand? |
mine bolted straight on... dosn't touch anywhere..
Only issue I have had.. is the rear caliper has put a large dent in the under side of the silencer dueing full wheel travel.... |

Is your silencer fitted with spacers between the strap mountings and the frame or not? I have 15mm spacers with mine but after hearing you and others mention the brake caliper thing I wonder if I should space it out more. |

Thats a serious dent mate!! Well this explains why the guy I bought this system off gave me 2 non standard spacers. I got the 15mm spec from Metalmule themselves but the spacers I got were 30mm or more at the back and probably 15-20mm at the front. I will dig them back out of my scrap jar when I get back home tonight. Also, with the back being further out than the front spacer it will twist the pipe away from the frame a bit more. Hopefully.

dent it once... From there on you have clearance.. |
