Is there anyone wanting to share a cabin on a ferry from Plymouth on the 20th and return on the 6th and not booked yet? Otherwise I'm on a lounge seat cause I'm cheap ba$tard ... games room has soft carpet from what I'm hearing hmm...
Is crashing somewhere on the floor generally accepted on those ferries?

While I'd rather not think ill of people and would like to believe that they haven't been sold.... there were a few opportunistic fellas in this part of Morocco. :070:

This was *part* of the reason that I chose not to make a 600k detour to retrieve them. The other part was an interest to see how many k's I could get out of the knobbly tyres, which turned out to be an interesting exercise :045:

Unfortunately, I have no way of reaching the young bloke to confirm the status of the tyres, so hopefully if someone is in need, they are still available.

Ohlins 19-08-13 18:53

LOL...no problem...

I'll certainly keep it in mind for sure!!!... I can imagine a 600mile detour !!

Gents,

What's the deal with bike insurance for visiting Morocco?

After a quick look at my policy wording then Morocco ain't in the EU therefore not covered.

What needs to be done? Buy at the border? Not worth it?

Thanks,

Nick.

Ohlins 19-08-13 21:38

Hi Nick...

if you're not covered by your own insurance company...then you can buy it at the docks upon entering Maroc. Last year two riders purchased insurance for approx 50 for 3 weeks....

I'd say it'll be about the same...

Ferry booked...:118:
this is happening

Ohlins 30-08-13 23:10

Excellent!!

Starting to look forward to it myself....getting close...sort of... :)

I'll post more stupid stuff come closer to the time as to what's what...

Must get the XT serviced and a new set of tyres ordered....just the usual guff...

Yup, I read the policy doc, it says something like EU and associated territories, whatever they are.
I'm with ebike, so get 365 days EU cover. I'll email them to get it clarified.

Ohlins, As I now have some wheels I will almost certainly be meeting up with you on the 22nd at Algerceiras.

If you know of a point where we can meet let me know, otherwise I'll just tag on the back of the largest group of bikers that passes....... that should be you lot!!!! ;-)

Nick, I'm with ebike and have been trying to find out if they cover Morocco for the trip and it seems like they don't. The associated territories don't include Morocco only a couple of countries in Europe not in the EU.

Looks like I'll have to pick up insurance from the docks once there.

Hi Nick...

Good to have you on board...

Yip...there's a small moto park area close to the main terminal where you buy tickets....in fact it's the only moto park as far as I know. We can meet there as we park there and dander across the road to buy the tickets.

Closer to the time I'll get a head count and some contact details so we can all know what's what.

:)

So what is a tire of choice this year? Are you staying with E07?
I'm thinking tkc80/k60 front/rear...

qwerty 13-09-13 18:47

Hi Oldmanthatcansee
I am also coming along, and have just put on a set of tkc 8o's front and rear. I have a xt660r hopefully the rear will last the 5,000 odd miles. But when we hit the trails, then I am guessing it will be the better tyre for me.

rog

minkyhead 13-09-13 22:07

if its any good to anyone for travelland trail ive had very good service from

mitas e09 dakar rear

tkc 80 front

i find the e09 very accepatble on the road much much better than a tkc off road ....particularly when wet
and longer lasting than the tk rear ..its a good duel tyre

strangly the e09 front is not a great tyre either way thus the tk for distance ..usually good for 8k or thereabouts
i havnt found a front knob tyre to beat it for wear ..or road grip ,,it decent enough on dry going ..but sadly pretty rubbish in softer sand ..understandable
given its wide type of use
..but for maroco s cart tracky rocky trails its a good choice overall

this k60 scout was taken off at 4000 miles as the centre wear band was lethal on wet grass but it should be fine in maroc ..pleanty of tread left
i reacon a mefo would be a better bet that centre band is a pain in the ass

http://imageshack.us/a/img215/858/heiinkau.jpg

heres my last tk taken off at 3800 miles

http://imageshack.us/a/img11/8285/0ws3.jpg

ive run quite few different tyres on the xt
http://imageshack.us/a/img208/3156/img2356r.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img836/5787/fosk.jpg

for a proper 50 /50 e09 dakar is a good comprimise ..i have run one to 6000 miles but its pretty knobless by then

Probably stay with the E07's as can use them here all year round...I find them very good in the wet as an aside....for me they're cheap and I've got about 11,000kms on them already ...majority of hard riding.

Front's not great on loose going or wet mud but I find them a very good compromise .

Getting closer these days....I'll ping everyone soon for any updates etc.

Carry on Capt Mainwaring....

Well thats done it !!!!! 11000kms did it for me just swopped my TKC after 7000kms (fcuked by the way) to the e07.........€54
I'll be leaving the front TKC on to see how it goes.

Ohlins 26-09-13 08:46

Morning Phil....

I'd get about another 500kms or so and then they'll be zapped...so overall not too bad a compromise. What company did you order the tyre through? (I think allo pneus have a promo on at present)

I'll be hooking up with Phil this week to sort out stuff so there'll be an info email pinging along at some stage.

(Can you ping me your email address also by chance to kboydnfpa at laposte dot net?)

:)

PhilinFrance 26-09-13 17:44

PhilinFrance 30-09-13 14:40

Keith (Ohlins)
As a follow on to the air box thing and which bike to go on , can i ask what scale of difficulty you're planning ?

Reason i ask is the other times i've been i push to the extream (8.5 out of 10) with the DR and know full well i couldn't throw the Black Pig around the same ..............but knowing me i'll have a go

Do we have a list of bikes yet and peoples skills ?

I'll start

Tenere 660xtz ..........probably SH1TE on it :tard:
or
DR650 suzuki............V Good, brainless nutter :blob8:

Phil

Ohlins 30-09-13 20:27

Hi Phil..

There are people who've never ridden off road before going in a mix of big trailies (GS's) and down to the XTZ and some who have off roaded...a mixed bunch as it were.

I'm looking at showing people Marco who've never been (as well as those that have) and if they need any tuition then that can be given. When you read the adv ride report mentioned earlier you'll see the type of trails. Having said that if anyone gets onto trails that parallel others that are more difficult then by all means give them a go. It's your holiday

When I rode for Redtread we had the perfect moto..CRF 450's that were rode fast all the time to make our evening deadline hotel.

The XTZ would be comfortable when it comes to the auto route cruising and it'll certainly do all the trails that are thrown at it,if a bit slower than the DR.

There'll be camping stuff on all motos too as we plan to allow for a few nights wild camping so that should have an impact on what you decide?

When it's safe to do so,or not even.I'll be scooting along rightly as the trails allow...so will Phil....
The others..I don't know their skill levels until we get there...

Starting to look forward to it ....I'll be contacting an hotel tomorrow to reserve rooms as cheap as possible in Spain. After that it'll be winging it!!

Any thing else just fire away

:)

.

PhilinFrance 30-09-13 21:53

Sorted mate , i do want to try the Black Pig down there and don't mind leading a group of newbies as i've had a day or 2 off roading :laughing9:

I'm all for everyone having a good and safe time , i just need someone sensible to look after me.

I was thinking of having a run down to yours next Saturday if you're about , if you're up for it can you give us directions ?

Phil

Hi all,rog of plymouth here just a heads up to anyone using the plymuff to Santander ferry. I think the ferry departs 3.45pm on the Sunday, so I guess most people will come down on the day, but if there are a few from up north then you are very welcome to stay on the sat night. Same as on the day if people want to meet at mine for a mug of tea and a bacon and egg sarnie, as there is sod all at the ferry Port.
Keith do you have a rough route yet ?

Hi Phil...

Yip..all those with experience can certainly assist others who've never ridden off road before.

It'd be great to see you next week for sure...I'm committed Sat evening from about 1800hrs so through the day would be quite OK.

I'll ping you by email with my address etc.

:)

Hi Roger...

Thanks for your update. I'll be pinging stuff later on i.e. next few days.

Due to the number of riders I'm thinking of a less hectic route to ride down to Algeciras from Santander.....one that I've ridden before.

All that to say,I'll contact the hotel I have in mind tomorrow and see if they can provide cheapskate lodgings to include sharing rooms.

Frank is now not going in the Land Rover as of today...he's committed to running his shop on the dates at present.

Starting to look forward to the ride out....and all of the stupidity that ensues thereafter lol

:)

We'll either have to pay top dollar for the red when we get there...or find a place to stash it somehow on our motos!!..It's all a worry!!

I'm sure we can find a solution.....somehow.....somewhere...with some help from some sort of a support group...yes...that's it...there has to be a moto wine stashing support group...somewhere......
