Luggage Top Plate in alu for XT660Z
Ok, I made a model after a couple of measurements and paper templates... :glasses2:
And this is what I come up to, please let me know what you think and if you have some improvement ideas that I could do! :icon_idea: http://www.xphase.se/temp/top_racket/top_racket4_s.jpg http://www.xphase.se/temp/top_racket/top_racket5_s.jpg http://www.xphase.se/temp/top_racket/top_racket6_s.jpg http://www.xphase.se/temp/top_racket/top_racket7_s.jpg |
Looks nice!!!
:045: |
A work of art.:coastguard:

Look greats.
Ive been doing the same thing just lately, just been mocking one up in carboard (used the touratech one as a starting point). i want mine to support roll bags. so the main difference im going for over the touratech one is making it wider to help support the roll bag. Also making it slightly more of a square shape (apart from where it fits to the bike near the pillion seat) |
If anyone could add a decent grab rail to one of these, I'd be seriously interested. The grab handles on the Ten are the main cause of complaint from both my wife and my son, so I need an alternative.
|
Nice functional design, what thickness aluminium are you thinking of using? Id be keen on one.
|
One practical advice, that I would like to have on such plate:
Make another hole in the most rear part of the plate in the middle. It is functional when using elastical straps or net. I like to attach it in the midle in the rear also, so I am sure nothing will get loose or lost when having luggage on that plate. I ussually put on top of dry bag my Teva sandals, plastic bottl of water... shirt or towel that can dry while riding... Such stuff can slip back and fell off, that is less likely to happen if there is attachment on the rear also, not only on sides. |

************************************************** ******* Ok, I have made some minor changes on the plate... Added some extra holes near the edge to be used with elastic straps, or whatever you want... (suds750 wanted some grab rails, and it could be used for that too.) Reduced the number of slots from 4 to 3 on the angled part, to make it more stiffer than before! BUT ALSO these holes is mounting ponts for a plate extensioner. That would be possible to use if riding alone and for longer distances or just if you dont want to use the side panniers but however want som more luggage capacity. This is still just a sketch, I have not yet measured exactly how long or wide it would be... OR how I will solve the need of an support underneath the plate. This extensioner would make the luggage area about 220% bigger compared to the smaller one. What do you think about it, good or bad? :eusa_think: The smaller standard size plate, but with added holes around and reduced slots... also changed the logotype to a more discreeter one! http://www.xphase.se/temp/top_racket/top_racket8s.jpg Plate extensioner... http://www.xphase.se/temp/top_racket...widener_1s.jpg http://www.xphase.se/temp/top_racket...widener_3s.jpg http://www.xphase.se/temp/top_racket...widener_4s.jpg http://www.xphase.se/temp/top_racket...widener_6s.jpg http://www.xphase.se/temp/top_racket...widener_7s.jpg |
I like it! :D
I'd thought long and hard about a rack for the pillion seat (yet done nothing about it!) and your extension idea is just the sort of thing I had in my mind. At the time I thought any rack could fix to the grab rail mountings... http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...ailfixings.jpg ...and then changing to longer bolts and making up a pair of tubular spacers or suitable brackets for support at the front? Keep up the good work buddy! |
Ok, holes are now better on the rear, just make sure they are big enough to fit some most standard used hooks on straps.
I like the rear hole on the extensioner more, than on base plate. Its more in the middle and bigger. I understand you want to keep some space for logo... |
Pleiades:
Thats a good idea, those mounting points would probably be great! :) Ni3ous Hmm.... I think you're right, it would probably be better with a slot in the rear end of the plate instead of holes. And yes, I want some space for the logo... But I did a small change, so now there is both. Check it out and tell me what you think.... http://www.xphase.se/temp/top_racket/top_racket9s.jpg What do you think about the size? http://www.xphase.se/temp/top_racket...cket_ver5S.JPG |
How much ??

But I hope under 50-60... |

I would be a little bothered about having a thin edge (on the extension) behind my backside in case of an off. How about a folded edge much like the one on the rack but folded at 90 deg??:eusa_think: |

Base plate is now perfect for me!
Extension plate could be wider if you put dry bag across, reason - not to sag on hot pipes. Just an idea. Maybe you can build wide tipe and long type of extension, so choice for all customers wishes. |

No, I will only do one type of extension plate.... I will look into what size it would be soon! There will be some modifications on the length and width and also how it will be mounted! |
There are some really talented people on here

Question, I will soon try to get a cost sheet for the luggage plate and the extender.
How many of you would be interested in one of these? |
I would be interested in both (luggage plate and the extender).
|
I would be interested in both too.
|
Ok, some updates....
I made some paper templates just to get a feeling how the size would be. And of course I would like to know what you guys think! I'm quite satisfied with the small size plate! But with the bigger one, well.... I dont know. It feels... VERY large! But very much luggage space though! :) What do you think, is that size good or should it be smaller... like half of the size and no mounting points in the front instead? That would be easier to mount, and little more space behind your back. But there would be smaller luggage space and not as stable if there's no mounting points in the front of the extender.... http://www.xphase.se/temp/top_racket..._widener_8.JPG http://www.xphase.se/temp/top_racket...widener_10.JPG http://www.xphase.se/temp/top_racket...2018.23.35.jpg http://www.xphase.se/temp/top_racket...2018.25.21.jpg |
Will the seat still come off with the extended plate?:tongue3:
|
What sought of coating will they have? Paint or black anodizing. I'm not to keen on the large plate but do like the look of the small plate. Would you ship to Australia?
|

No, actually I dont really know yet! :) That depends on what distance's you are using! But that's a good point, and something I will look into.

Okay, now you gonna be tired of me... But I have made another model of extension plate that is a little smaller. I didn't like the look of the longer extension plate, and it would also be a little more work to mount it because of the distance's you have to mount on the grab handles.... This smaller extension, would ONLY be mounted on top of the smaller plate. And would still be strong enough to not have any mounting points in the front of it. It would also (as steveD pointed) be easier to get the seat off even with the extension plate on. It would be about double the size than the smaller plate... What do you think? Is it big enough? Better or worse than the first extension plate? Any thoughts about this? http://www.xphase.se/temp/top_racket/extension1.JPG http://www.xphase.se/temp/top_racket/extension2.JPG |
Rack with big extension + mounting points.
Love the look of the rack and extension off the bike but would be concerned about the extension when on the bike - as mentioned above (backside and an off etc). Maybe I worry too much. |
Big extension is not needed, Drybag sits ok on the back seat as well. Looks of it is also a little weird. Do not expect a lot of orders.
But I think small plate is interesting. Since I see you like doing stuff for Tenere think about other things to build instead of extended top plate. By now, no company builded a good skid plate, thats why I made it on my own. Mine is light, and cowers water pump without extra steel tube pipes. And for my its the best lookin of them all. If you construct such plate for a bit better price I think you would have orders. I can help you with design if you like. -the build: http://shrani.si/f/3m/i3/aBpAGjL/1/06032011.jpg -polished http://shrani.si/f/3F/uQ/lGL4J6i/img3591.jpg -bottom view: http://shrani.si/f/1i/aY/4fDzYSGX/img3648.jpg -side: http://shrani.si/f/3N/IO/vOo8PhK/img3600platew.jpg http://shrani.si/f/2r/w2/3LgyHzf4/img3618.jpg There are some more stuff you can do better that some companies and for smart price, like handlebar risers that also puts bar a bit forward not only upwards (and with that backwards, since the angle of forks is like so) After that you loose clearence on dashboard, so you can make dash board extensions ( there are only two bolts that holds dashboard, mask and light), to put front mask a bit forward, and a bit more vertical. I believe that would make better windflow and would give more clearence, to put handlebar up and more forward, so better riding position and control if you ride standing alot. I did not do that yet because than turn signal plastics would have to be adjusted. Poliester made new panels that would fit between new position of mask and gasoline reservoir. I hope this makes any sense, otherwise I can put some extra effort and show the idea in some pictures... I see, you want to make foot pegs... I ride in standing postition most of the time, that means there is need of longer and especially wider pegs, so weight is distributed on bigger surface, that makes riding in standing position less "painfull". There is more... but... step by step. |
Bash guard is a nice option!
|
Ni3ous:
Thanks for your good ideas, I mainly do stuff that I myself need. Thats why I do much things for the Tenere. :) I already have a bash plate so thats not my number one priority, but it could be good winter project. So if you have any good design ideas let me know. Thats nice bash guard you made yourself! Big and good protection for the engine. I really like it! Handlebar risers is an upcoming project, I already have som ideas and models about that. You will notice further on... :) If you have any ideas or images you would like to share please PM me or send mail to info@xphase.se. About the dashboard I didn't really understand what you mean.... I think I will go with the smaller extension plate because of my own needs and the easier way to mount it. |
How about a mount for the bar above the speedo to mount a GPS. Maybe a aluminum block that you can screw a threaded ram mount ball into. The bar is 12mm in diameter and the smallest the ram mounts go down to is for 13mm round bar.

Just to have you guys updated!
I have got my first prototypes from the fabric, and just mounted them on my bike and it fits really nice. Just have to bend the wings in correct angles and then anodize them to get the final results. I will keep you updated as soon as I have any pictures for you! :) |
Just wondering how the rear racks are moving along.
|
I soon have the first prototypes finished! They will be on anodizing in the end of this week, so in the next week I will have some product photos with the final result to show you! :)
|
Here are some crappy teaser images... (please be aware that they are not finished yet!)

anymore up dates on this
|
They are on anodizing right now, will have them back next week! *excited!!* :)
Later on, if there are any interested in these rackets. I need to order minimum of 10 at once to have the price down to satisfied margin. It will be around $120 for the smaller one i think! |
Soon they will arrive........
|
Ok, finaly some updates.... It took a little bit longer than I thought to have them anodized. But now they are finished!
This is how they look like (sorry for the bad quality, I dont have any better camera available just now): Small one: http://www.xphase.se/temp/top_racket/svart_ram/bild1 http://www.xphase.se/temp/top_racket/svart_ram/bild2 http://www.xphase.se/temp/top_racket/svart_ram/bild3 Extension plate: http://www.xphase.se/temp/top_racket/svart_ram/bild4 http://www.xphase.se/temp/top_racket/svart_ram/bild5 http://www.xphase.se/temp/top_racket/svart_ram/bild6 |
