Its got the chip for registering other keys to the ignition/immobiliser. You'll never need it if you don't lose the black keys.

+1
I was told by dealer that if you lose red key & you then either lose both black keys or need another black key, you are f**ed!!! Basically, a complete rewire/new wiring loom is required. Something about the immobiliser being paired with the red key. I think it would cost lots of /$$$$$ to sort out & would have a not insignificant effect on resale value..... Anyway, how hard can it be to put the red key along with your passport, birth certificate, other valuables etc. into a cheap home safe.

As said above if you loose the red key, and the 2 black ones, you'll need a new ECU, new igintion barrell, new seat lock and the whole thing will cost A LOT of money.

Also if you try to flog a bike without the red/black keys only a breaker's yard will buy it off you for spares and give you little for it. No one will want to buy as it will look well dodgy.

Well your bike is worth less as u dont have a red key and you cannot get a second key cut from the black one, so u godda be VERY careful not to lose the first black key. Ask the previous owner and or the dealer if you can BUY the red key if they can find it........

I'm in the same situation, i put my red key somewhere so safe, i can no longer find it. A real pain in the arse, i've looked everywhere, and to make matters worse, i had a massive clear out just before realising it had gone, so its probably in a landfill somewhere.

Gulp!!!
I also read somewhere that you can accidentally 'erase' the black key magnetically or intereference from other electrical sources. You then take 'erased' key along with original red key to dealer, who will reprogramme black key using red key data. So: DON'T LOSE RED KEY AT ALL COSTS!!!

You also can make a copy of the black key without the red one. I thoght it was impossible but not.
