Thank God for Steve D!!!
Hi all,
Tonight on my way home from work, I was the unfortunate victim of a hit and run! Some total ars3 wipe in a 4x4 (no doubt drunk) was came over a bridge on my side of the road with their full beam on. I managed to slam my brakes on, move the bike to the left and hope for the best. The a55 hole clipped my handle bars and put me on the floor. Me and the ten slid about 15 meters and I narrowly missed going under the wheels! Next thing I know im on my back with a fecked knee looking over my shoulder to watch the tw4t speed off! When the cops turned up they looked at my skid marks etc and deduced that the driver had made no attempt to stop at all their was no skid marks or anything on their behalf! Fortunately the bike seems to have very minor damage. Ball end of the brake lever is ground down, Rear brake lever is bent (Again) and the crash protector on the tank is ground away nicely. Unfortunately it does appear to have gotten through to the tank and peirced and very small hole into it. New tank? reweld? anyway heres a few pants pics I took at the scene. http://i733.photobucket.com/albums/w...s/IMAG0712.jpg http://i733.photobucket.com/albums/w...s/IMAG0713.jpg http://i733.photobucket.com/albums/w...s/IMAG0714.jpg Reason why this is titled 'Thank God for SteveD' is this.... http://i733.photobucket.com/albums/w...s/IMAG0715.jpg The kit that he gave me at the lakes meet has sure enough done its job! There is only slight scratches on my jacket and my trousers are full of holes down the right hand side. The pads in them worked wonders! I have a very dead leg/knee however I can bend it etc so no lasting damage as the kit took most of the brunt! So thank you SteveD!!! :headbang: Just goes to shwo eh, no matter who and where you are, no matter how often you ride that same stretch of road and no matter what your experience level....The worse can happen any time, any where! Well I will see what the true extent of the damage is tomorrow!!! Judging by what I put her through at the lakes my hopes are high! |
Glad you managed to get away with no injuries. There are some dangerous tw#ts about.
|
Blimey Chris.....
Just goes to show, you've gotta be on your guard, and it pays to have the right gear on, even if you are just going to the shops. Glad you're OK. |
good to hear you are ok, yep the right gear is important, saved me countless times!
as for the tank keep an eye on ebay as they come up from time to time. as a temporary measure perhaps try a fibreglass repair I'M sure if the correct prep is done it should be permanant, deffo look into the possibility. the main thing is, you are ok! |
Wow, glad you are OK and the gear certainly did its job.
By the way the tank plastic is about 5 mm thick. If the hole is just a pin prick you could try a stainless steel screw, would last forever!, or until you can get another tank. Will keep eyes out for another. |
Mate, sorry to hear.. :(
Your bike don't look to happy on the deck like. Hope it's ok, and you. Don't know if it's true, but a mate/welder at work once said never to weld a tank because they can explode? I had a hole in a tank once. speak soon must be the chinese year of the knee |
Cheers folks, DOCs said no lasting damage but off work until monday at least!
As for the tank issue ill get some pics up later and see what folks think. The bobby didnt seem to think that it was fuel that had leaked, but im pretty sure it was! Will take a while though as ive left the bike at the missuses folks house. Any how, cheers for the well wishes. Will keep you updated. |
Sorry to hear this Chris but glad you are OK.
|
I hope the 4x4 drivers balls go square and fester in all the corners.
Pleased you and the Ten are set for a fast recovery Chris. |
Close call Chris, glad your ok and the Ten is not badly damaged.
|
Glad you are still here mate. That gear certainly saved some long term pain...
I know... |
Good to here your not too badly damaged and that the gear did its job. Ive had a few moments like that when i was heading back from uni, country road and people just sit in the middle and never move over.
I think welding a metal tank is a complete no no but as for the plastic tank not 100% sure. Best bet is to find someone that either does fibreglass welding or plastic welding and take them the tank and see what they say |
Rotten luck Chris. Pleased you (and the Ten) are OK and here's to a speedy recovery.
|
At least your ok and bike is repairable mate, a lucky escape, i hope that t**t ends up upside down in a ditch, too many of them f**kers about. Steves kit saved your bacon and thats the main thing.
Regards, Jim |
Well to add to the friggin whole thing.......
Miding my own business on my way into town this morning guess what..... Another friggin 4 wheeled metal box found its way to plough into my side! Can't be bothered to go into the whole story but long and short of it is I went to over take and he jumped out infront of me. Driver behind me is acting as my witness and stated that the driver who hit me never gave any indication that he was going to swing right. Had any of the tell tales been there I wouldnt have gone to overtake him. This was how his car was positioned etc before I over took him...... Tyres- pointing straight Drivers head- looking forwards Indicators- none flashing Position- to the left hand side of the road Road conditons- dry open clear veiw and straight Oncoming traffic- none Checked bike over no damage- rides fine. His drivers door and wing are fecked and will need some serious work! 2-0 to my XT!!!! Man I swear down sh*t is attracted to me! |
Not fair, you're like a moving target, lol.
Mate, glad you ok.. |
Bloody hell, glad you're mostly OK!
|
Chris - Glad you're Ok mate.
I'm sure your old fella will tell you this anyway.... when you approach any vehicle from behind make yourself seen, it's not fool proof, but it gives you a better chance, and may have prevented this incident. You can do this by taking control of the road. The Tenere has lots of presence, but you need to exploit this to get the most impact. When approaching, and from a long way back, use all 5 road positions, starting with the inside, and take a look up the inside, there may be a hazard that the driver in from will move to the right for) and moving to the outside in preparation for the overtake. Drivers are more likely to see a bright light moving across their mirrors (even if they don't use them). Use the same approach after completing the overtake, especially in traffic, move to the inside position, and take the opportunity to take a look up the inside again, then move back out to the outside position. The same lateral movement on approach to junctions also helps to improve your chances of being seen. This might have helped, or they might not, but anything that improves your chances is worth doing. The only thing I will say, it makes your riding appear very aggressive, so you need to use hand signals to thank drivers , a nod, anything to acknowledge drivers who give you room/priority etc. Perhaps this is a good time to look at some rider training, you might be doing something in your riding that a good observer/trainer will spot and help you improve your riding. We all do stuff that puts us in more danger than we should, the key is to recognise none of us are perfect and get a peer to review your riding. I say this as news of another rider (the father of my friends daughters friend) who I knew of (just the 'hello' type of know) hit a cow on a long straight road last week on his Aprillia, he died on Tuesday night from his injuries. |
Sh.t news Chris, again glad you are ok.
To quote a song, some days you get diamonds, some days you get dimes. Just think of it as another dime day mate. The diamonds will come.:viking: |
Gess man your just having not luck at all, dont worry you not the only crash test dumby, Jasxt had a few crashs/RTA with his Xt's.
:smilies0944: for the future anyway buddy |

Allthough letme just make it clear to everyone that I do allways make sure i am in a position where i can be seen, I take every precaution to be visable I.E high vis clothing etc..... It just so happens that the bloke never once checked his mirrors! As of yet I havent heard anything from insurance. Im guessing he will try and claim but he wont get very far good job there was a witness behind me! :p |
