How far does your XTZ go before the F-Trip starts flashing?
There seems to be a recurring debate about the tank range of the Tenere, so I thought it might be good too get an idea of what's going on in the real world. As the title says - how many miles (Km) do you get on average before the F-Trip starts flashing and you're into the "reserve"?
Post any other relevant details like, mpg (l/100Km), theoretical tank range, any fueling mods and maybe what type of fuel you use. |
F-Trip usually starts flashing after approximately 190 miles and takes roughly 16.5 litres of fuel at about 53 mpg, giving a theoretical range to empty of about 250 miles.
Relevant mods: Exan 2-1, PCV + 02 Optimizer, DNA Stage 3 Fuel: Usually 99RON Super Riding style: Pretty average I'd guess, don’t hang about, but I’m no Michael Dunlop either! ;) |
Ah,,,,
Small problem.... There is no option for "random" :shave[1]: |
Usually 211-220 miles before F trip. Can be a bit more or less. No fuel or engine mods, standard exhaust. Usually about a third of a tank left at F trip.
|
i found this in my photos of my RTW (so far)
this is one of my better mileage days, from a full tank start i filled up at 301.3 miles, i put in 4.399 gallons - remember the US gallon is smaller than the UK, the tank holds approx 5.1 UK gallons or 6.1 US gallons so the theoretical range was 417.81 miles to the tank http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/u.../SAM5186-L.jpg http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/u.../SAM5187-L.jpg |
when i was still running the bike in i got to 410k's before the f-trip kicked in (no extended periods over 4500 rpm for the first thousand k's then nothing over 6200rpm till 1600 k's...decided to follow the manual) now im upping the tacho a bit more and the fuel economy varies. no average as yet.
|
Not sure on tank range just yet but i filled up my just purchased tenere and with faffing around on 50-60mph roads all day with quiet a high 4-5k rpm average i got 60mpg which i thought wasnt too bad. Also in most places it was very windy at around 50-60mph as well!!!!
|
Latest tank would have covered 371 miles; F-trip kicked on at 277.7 miles. Standard 95 petrol. Only thing I did differently this time was add Militec metal conditioner to the oil; from Zenoverland. This bike just keeps getting better. Over 70 mpg!

My ten is still new to me and I've only refueled twice. So not much for statistics...
Both refuels has been 21,8liter when I chickened out looking at the F-Trip counter and refueled. Then I had done 63 and 75km on F. (first was highway and second was smaller roads) Assuming the 5,8 liter reserver is real Looking at the last refill somethings don't add up - but very close The average on the last tank was 21,7km/l. And the last few hundreds km was not highway so not less than the average. 17,2liter to reserve at 21,7km/l gives 373km until F (Reality was 399km) I should then have used 4.6 liter on F in only 75km meaning only 16,3km/l - don't think so. Instead assuming the average og 21,7km/l I've only used 3,5liter and then reserve first kicked in at 18,3 liters (and 18,6liter by the first refill) But maybe I'm just filling it with about 1liter more than its nominal capacity... I have still to run it dry and see how much I can fill it with to the brim. But looks like I can assume to do between 80 (highway at 110km/h) to 95km (roads at 90-100km/h) |
I get just about the same on every tank.
F trip comes on at 250 miles I fill up at 50 miles on F trip so 300 in total and get just under 22ltr in the tank. Thats around 63 mpg. Mike |
My F trip just came on at 400kms did another 32kms and filled up with 19.1lts
22.5 km/l or roughly 65mpg :thumbsup[1]: |

I thought that only the top of the tank was changed to provide room for the battery, but I've not had a closer look below yet. Only had it moved a bit aside to access the battery. Coming from a raised super tenere it is much lower. So much smaller that my 6year old son commented on it, when they where parked side by side :-) But ABS was the reason to buy it. I ride to much in traffic and ABS might save my ass some day on a unpredictable surface... The reason to buy it now was a fair price on a low mileage two year old one. On my Super Tenere i have fittet flowmeter with electronic from http://www.enduro-stammtisch.de/ and a bicycle computer as display. It is accurate within a fre %. I've also drilled the breather hole so it can hold 30liter. On average i have refilled it with 26 liter (the official capacity) but very often between 27 and 29liter. I have used it a lot for commuting and know where fuel is available :-) So even trough its carbs are a bit worn again (needles are worn) it still does at least 16km/l and a range of 475km. I was looking at the same range for my next ride. Not that i need it to get to work but out of convenience not having to refuel all the time. Before buying the small tenere I also looked a lot at the bmw g 650 g sartao that is on sale this year in DK. A new 2012 one with ABS is 32000 DKR less than a yamaha xt660z tenere (on the road including the danish taxes). That is a difference of 4300/3600/5700$ ... I even considered a Sartao with touratech 2x11liter sidetanks even through they are very expensive. In the end i stayd in know territorie and the xt660z is my third tenere. I've also had an 1988 xt660z 3aj with a big tank :-) I still have to learn how much i can trust the fuel meter, but so far 80km on reserve seems to safe ... |
My F-trip kick in when tank is about half full, so annoying. Even though I know there should be gas in it I get nervous when I ride where there are no petrol stations nearby and the fuel meter is flashing.

F trip at 220 - then takes 17 litres

I managed 66.85mpg yesterday. Got to about 240m before trip started flashing. That's with Kev mod, fuel mod, MTC single can, K&N, no AIS and a bald rear tyre
|
After my first fill-up I filled up again at 271 miles and the F-Trip hadn't kicked-in. It took 17.91 litres which equates to 69mpg. Mind you, that's running-in with a max. of 4500 rpm.
So much for the F-Trip starting to flash when there's 6.7 litres left as the owner's manual states! Given the tank holds 23 litres, I must've had around 5 litres left. Next time I'll go on till the F-Trip starts flashing. |
225 to 235 miles to f-trip then about 16.5ltrs of fuel to full again. That's day to day ridings without working the bike hard apart from the odd wind up to overtake.
The other day I ran on f-trip for 45.4miles and then filled up with 22.75ltrs. Total range for that tank was 273 miles and I would have been very reluctant to push further. Bike is now four years old and shows 15k on the clock. Sent from my HTC One V using Tapatalk |
when i fist had it from new about 180 to f-trip
once run in i went up to 220 odd then cat cut out and even more run in 245 odd but this drops quite a bit in mid winter - back down to about 215/220. at first i thought it was the bike but once the days warmed up again it returned to 240 plus with the occational 250 to 270 depending the type of riding. 300 miles is always achievable from a tank though (neck drilled) fuel mod, co2 mod, no cat, derestricted pipe, pipercross filter, no snorkle, iridium plug. 44 000 miles on the clock now. |

My riding is more or less the same as its in and out of work on the north circular A40 and M40 and as I do shift work I'm often going in when its well into the minus degrees so I'm assuming the injection is richening the intake to suit.
|
mine started flashing last night and i panicked and filled up! i did 5.5 miles with it flashing but then still only got 18.4 litres in it, so with a 23 litre tank i still had loads left, that tank (2nd tank from new, still running in below 4k) was nearly 260 miles which is 62mpg give or take, my rgv250 used to do 60 miles to a tank......
|
Today i decided to run it dry (again)
The F came on after 357,7km and did 137,3 on reserve for a total of 495km. I put 0,5liter on and refilled with 24,5 liter 5km later. At 20-25km/l 5km would consume less than 1/4 liter - Total usable tank capacity with filled neck is ~24,75liter |
The original topbox holds easily two 5 liters spare tanks . I use about 3-4 liters to more the lawn
Sendt fra min GT-I9192 med Tapatalk |
Best I ever got out of a tank including f trip was 555.6 ks.I was well impressed.
|
I used to get 250 every time before f-trip came on.
Then over time the bike settled into about 200-210 miles befofe f-trip. No i have fitted the following:- Stage 1 and 2 DNA Kev fuel 7 o2 mod De-catted OEM pipe I am still getting 200 beofre f-trip. Is this normal? Mike |

I did notice a slight improvement when I fitted the O2 tuner, maybe 10 or 20 miles a tank. |

Hmmm. My bike always gets better fuel consumption in warmer weather (around the low 30s C). In cold weather it gets noticeably worse. Bike's engine systems are completely stock. Fuel tank filler neck is also stock.
|
Mine seems to run better in the summer too.
I read that one guy tested the kev mod on all settings and said that when set to 4 o'clock the fuel economy was good. |
"Ideal settings" of the Kev Mod do not exist, and what is the best setting for one Tenere does not have to work on others. The only thing to find it is to try and see what happens.
What this Kev Mod does is trick the bikes computer into thinking that the air temperature is lower than it really is. Colder air carries more oxigen (more compact thus a higher mass-flow) and with more oxigen you can burn more fuel. That is exactly what the computer does: Giving more fuel to the engine, in relation to the position of the potentiometer. It is actually nothing more than a variable resistor that you put in series with the air temperature sensor on the bike. As Kevin said himself: This mod will not replace a Power Commander, because it has only one set deviation for the entire RPM-reach. A PC uses different settings for each RPM region. BUT: It is the next best thing after a Power Commander. It is of course all about how much better you think that Power Commander really is and if it is worth that huge difference in price... For me it isn't, the Kev Mod works perfectly fine. And it will not have any problems with a broken USB-port caused by vibrations too. (once sold a used PC which worked well on my bike, but could not be reprogrammed for another bike of the same type: USB port broken.) |
Today I was in a hurry to catch a Ferry. Not just any ferry but the last of the day ... Failing would mean a 300km detour :-(
So when the F came out at 385km (240 miles) i continued at 125-130km/h (~80mph). I continued at that speed for ~40km before getting off the highway and continued at 100-120km/h. I've previously twice done over 120km on F, but today I only got 90km (56miles) 3km before the ferry it began to run unevenly but by shaking the bike a bit from side to side i got there. Had to be there 10minutes before departure but was there 6 minutes before... It died while getting the ticket but i had 0,6liter spare with me. So now i'm on board the ferry and has to remember to refuel very soon when getting back on the ground ... Lessons learned - 90km is max on F for me when in a hurry ... |

I've still to fit mine but the O2 mod made a major difference. It was just plug'n'play while the temperature mod either need wires to be cut or picking a wire out of a connector. So since i don't want to cut any wires I'll go for the second option. But i have not gotten to that yest since I've tried to source the connector for the temperature sensor. Imho the proper way to do it would be to make a small "extension" cable between the bikes harness and the temperatures sensor. I'm still riding with stock exhaust and filter so the temperature mod is more on a nice 2 have list than necessary for me. The O2 is a most have :-) |

The result was 616km at an average of 24km/l - i'm impressed of the high range but normally i don't have the patience but 500km is easily possible for me ... |
Somewhere inbetween 400 and 475 km. A few times less than that and a few times more than that.
The highest distance I rode was equal to Majlands at around 615 km. It was actually in Kyrgizstan riding around the Issikyl lake at the altitude of 17-1800 meter. Not so good road surface so had to ride rather slowly at around 50-80 Have to recalculate as the odo shows around 10 % too much after I changed sprockets to 15/48. Cant remember what time the reserve started to blink at that occation but it must have been around 480-490 km. Filled up 22,6 litres then... Have the ABS model with 15/48 gearing, Leo Vince pipes, KNA stage 2 and both mods from Kevin (O2 and fuel). Have higher windscreen from OTR and Barkbusters Storm as well and loads of other ****.... :D |
Well I had a crack at pushing the the tank range last night.
F-trip first came on at 400 odd k's ( at night about 10 degree's ) which it normally comes on around the 380 to 400k mark. The next time I used the bike was in the middle of a sunny day F-trip went off then came on again at 430k's. I then kept going to a total of 500k's ( F-trip on 70k's at that point ) and filled up. The fuel tank took smack on 22 litres. By my often useless calculations that gives me a fuel economy of 22.73k's to a Litre, and a tank range of a touch over 520k's before I have to start walking. Sorry for being slack & not giving figures in miles but I believe the 500k's is roughly 300 miles ( 100k's to 60 miles? ) The Bike has Kev Fuel Mod & O2 controller, Twin Akra's & Snorkel removed with stock oil filled foam air filter. I also had my closest call just missing a Roo last night too. I saw the whites of his eyes and his tail was inches from the front wheel as he hopped past. Fortunately I was only doing 70kph on the edge of town. All in the name of science. :icon_thumright: ( not sure how the red down pointing thumb got in the title above ? I didn't mean for that to be there. Because I'm more than happy ) |
In summer (warmer weather) I do about 245 miles to reserve and stretched range yesterday to 325 miles before filling up with 22.5 (?) litres (neck is drilled so tank will take 24.
Winter it drops to 215 miles or so before f trip comes on. |
Apologies
What is F Trip? |
