3rd service requirements on a tenere?
 

So, my local yamaha garage has gone bust and has now closed down :Mandy:

So i took the tenere to a new kawasaki garage as its the only garage close by locally for its 3rd service, i am just wondering if anyone knows what work should had been carried out, i did ask for it itemised?! But they just started to explain to me about somthing else and i was strapped for time and left without getting an itemised list of what work was carried out.

I am due to go back tomorrow to have some rear brake pads fitted and a new inner tube, i will definately ask for the itemised list from my service last week and have them hand write it if they need to! but i want to make sure they are doing all the service parts they need to be doing... from what i could tell, they just topped up my engine oil and checked brake pads and tyre pressures... my brake fluid hasent been topped up and im not sure what other work they should be doing on the 3rd service... they charged me �70 for that!

If anyone could give me a sort of list of what should had been done that would be fantastic! my service book is in french =[

Third as in 12,000 miles?

Well, here is the thing, i probably should have 12,000 miles on it by now, but i only commute 5 mins to work each day and have a mere 3200 on it... I just thought it was "due" a service :017:

you can download a manual from this site, also you can get a haynes manual for it.i got mine from halfords.

Should be serviced every 6,000 miles or every year, whichever comes first. How old is your bike and when was the last service done?


Basically, the services are as follows:

6.000 miles/1 year : Change the oil, check nothing is falling off

12,000 miles/2 years: Change the oil and filter, check the valve clearances, grease all the chassis bearings, make sure nothing is falling off.


TBH if you're not doing many miles I don't know if I'd bother with the valve clearances, especially if you're paying someone else to do it, as it's a pretty time consuming job, and they're extremely unlikely to have gone out of spec in 3200 miles.

I'd also be very wary of trusting a non-Yam garage to change the oil and get the right amount back in, especially if you haven't got a user manual for them to refer to.

Yeah i have been treating it as a yearly kinda thing with the intervals, just keeping everything upto scratch really, the bike is april 09, and i had it serviced i beleive at the beggining of last year (i think) i don't have my book on me, but the recent service was the 3rd time it had been done since sold (3 stamps in the book, the latest being an ugly kawasaki stamp!)

Also worth noting that you're supposed to change the coolant every three years, regardless of mileage.

I see! should that of been included in the service or somthing i do on my own? or have to request extra for them to do? I really need to go get me a haynes manual me thinks...:sad1:

It should never be necessary to top up brake fluid. If the level is low that can mean a couple of things:
- there is a leak somewhere, in which case you have serious issues that are not going to be solved by toppping up. This is not the most likely cause.
- it was not properly filled up during the last brake fluid change.
- the brake pads are worn down. Put in new ones and the fluid level should be near the top again.

Changing coolant is not that hard to do yourself.
If you are having your service done by a dealer that is not used to working on your bike it is always goo dto tell them exactly what needs to be done. Normally your owners manual has an overview chart with the attention points for each service interval.

You'd probably have to ask. It's pretty easy to do yourself though.

Definitely get a Haynes.
