RTW on my xt660z in lots photos & a few words...
i started in March 2011 and i think the best way to describe my trip and not get in to too many words is this.
"I haven't been everywhere but its on my list!" ...but if you do want to read a blog and learn about, being driven off the road in Bolivia, kidnapping in mexico, hanging out with an Indian tribe in British Columbia and fishing with them and catching an 88lb halibut, being the one person on the summer solstice camping the furthest north on the planet (just because), seeing a very very rare blonde grizzly bear in the wild, hanging out with gold miners in Alaska and much more then click here for a link to ADVrider for the blog http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=668901 or if you just like looking at pictures scroll down...i will be adding new photos on a regular basis the route...red line is done http://dmh65.smugmug.com/Other/RTW/i...y-route-XL.jpg i started in Ushuaia Argentina so that's where the photos will begin :Photos_3NT5BI: |
What's wrong with Brazil and China?:dontknow:
Looks to me you are really trying to go everywhere, like all the way through Russia and then back, seems a bit unlogical, but then again, why should it be. All the best on the rest of your trip, I will be on my own trip, following your line through Africa from next week. Tony |
Bookmarked the ADV link and will read with great interest and envy, good luck with the rest of the trip!
|
just looking at the advrider piccies and it looks like quite and epic trip:thumbsup[1]:

one thing i didn't mention is i plan to be on the road for about 15 years, so i have time, lots of it China, right now on your own bike is very difficult, you can do it sometimes with a guide but they cost about $200 per day, or on a local bike, thats a maybe in the future |

i'll break it down on here country by country and state to state |
You mentioned that you had a lowering kit installed.
- What kind of kit / who made it? - Did you lower the front and by how much? - Did the kit include a kick stand or did you shorten a standard one and if so by how much? I'm asking cause I have metal mule lowering links that I haven't installed yet. Waiting for more pics btw. |
Quote:
...but what i can tell you is the previous owner who added the lowering kit lowered the front as well, i raised it back up to stock level and the bike handled and performed better that way side stand was stock length, the bike blew over twice in the strong Patagonia winds on its side stand so a shorter one maybe a good idea, but the center stand was lowered, i think this was unnecessary, it made it difficult to do a tire change to fix a flat as both wheels were too close to the ground more photos coming very soon -Paul |
more argentina...
first day on the road and straight away i knew
WAY to much luggage

Perito Moreno glacier
As you get closer you can feel the cold radiating off the glacier, almost like you feel heat coming off a fire, the closer you get the colder it is...these pictures do not really show the massive size of the glacier, its the only advancing glacier in world according to info i read

so as i sit unable to walk the rest of the guys headed off to see Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt lake flats in the world, visible from space by not from my room where i lay with a very swollen ankle that wouldn't fit in my boot!

thought i'd throw you a few more seeing its a weekend...when i'm coming thru England, i have to stop by and meet some of you guys and share a few beers and stories...be there next summer
after staying up at 12,000 feet in a hostal and outside it dropped to -10 F at night it was time to increase elevation even more http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/b...SAM0454-X2.jpg http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/b...1010320-X2.jpg http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/b...1010323-X2.jpg http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/b...IMG2586-X2.jpg http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/b...SAM0504-X2.jpg as the altitude got higher the track got worse and worse then all of a sudden blacktop, what a relief after the inconsistent sand/ gravel/ rock mix http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/b...IMG2588-X2.jpg http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/b...IMG2589-X2.jpg http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/b...SAM0482-X2.jpg http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/b...1010333-X2.jpg http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/b...IMG2612-X2.jpg http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/b...SAM0506-X2.jpg http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/b...SAM0498-X2.jpg then we dropped altitude and small villages started to appear as we headed towards La Paz http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/b...3stitch-X2.jpg http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/b...IMG2618-X2.jpg |
rolled towards La Paz, about 40 miles outside the city limits came across a traffic jam, 20 MILES of stationary vehicles
http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/b...IMG2667-X2.jpg what could possibly be stopping all this traffic...this...and this is boulders for about 5 miles, the smoldering pieces are burning horses heads, think what that smelled like!!!! http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/b...IMG2675-X2.jpg http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/b...IMG2676-X2.jpg next was this, riot police, we were told not to take photos as we could be arrested!!! so i took a sneaky one http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/b...SAM0517-X2.jpg a little bit of off road, and then into the worlds highest capital http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/b...IMG2665-X2.jpg http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/b...IMG2734-X2.jpg http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/b...IMG2739-X2.jpg somewhere down there is where i'm staying!!! http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/b...SAM0536-X2.jpg http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/b...SAM0537-X2.jpg oh, and the riot it was about money, adjustments to the minimum wage, it had been going on a week and would continue for another week after i left, because of this i didn't get to ride Death Road (Yungas road and south Yungas road) because on that side of La Paz you could get out of the city but not back in!!! |
Absolutely fabulous trip! REALLY jealous right now.... :022:
A few quick questions on bike kit:
thanks, and safe riding! |

i am doing a refit on a lot of parts before i continue, hand guards are one of them, the brand i went with are Enduro Engineering, they have a flexible mount so if/ when you fall they won't break, just spring back into place here's an ebay link http://www.ebay.com/itm/Enduro-Engin...0#ht_500wt_969 |
 Thanks. For road work though were they decent enough?(before the fall and cable ties of course)
Other than the KTM ones which are probably on the top of my list just now, I`m hunting for hand guards that are more for deflecting cold and rain, such as the ones you get as standard on the Transalp rather than the guards for off road protection. Are they off the shelf ones then? I had assumed you had cannibalized another bike for them. Kind of look like Beemer ones a bit? Any links for them? Always wondered why Yammy never provided decent hard guards as standard.... |
they were on the bike when i got it, i just looked at them and there is nothing on them in the way of a brand etc, so i have no idea, they mount on the grip end , no removal of the weight necessary, just loosen and the other end mounts to the control housing...but yes they were good to stop wind and rain etc, that coupled with the grip heaters and the right gloves i never had cold hands, even in the snow, like below
http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/u.../SAM0672-M.jpg |
Lol, and I thought we got bad snow in Scotland :)
That makes sense about the hand guards though, as I`ve never seen anything like them for the Ten, especially after market...must have been added prior to them shipping it over. Oh well I`ll keep looking, but thanks for the pointers. :) Still jealous, especially now I`m reading your journey in more detail over on Advrider.. |
that wasn't heavy snow, this was the heaviest
http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/u.../SAM0889-M.jpg stories will continue may 2013, have to stop by when i'm in Scotland for a beer, it'll be around august next year |
:) More than welcome to stop by. Had to laugh a bit, as looking at your pictures from Nova Scotia etc, some of them looked like where I live and ride, in fact one just looks like Glen Coe. You can tell why they called it New Scotland :)
Safe riding :) |
leaving La Paz, ended up going down a street to go out of town which had the Saturday market, almost two hours to do about a mile or two but the sights were amazing...but to be honest Bolivians are not the best looking group in South America!!! :emoticons:

http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/p...5998761-X2.jpg once up there the views.... http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/p...SAM2531-X2.jpg http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/p...SAM2532-X2.jpg http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/p...SAM2548-X2.jpg http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/p...SAM2558-X2.jpg http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/p...SAM2563-X2.jpg http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/p...SAM2565-X2.jpg so the thing they push about Machu Picchu is the amazing stone work and how well everything fits and you look and admire it unless you here a guy say..." have you ever looked at Lincoln Cathedral and the stone work there? It was built 300 years earlier than this!" - well that kind of ruined it for me...but i get his point http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/p.../L/800px-L.jpg after that comment all you can appreciate is the location http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/p...7stitch-X2.jpg and then get the money shot... http://dmh65.smugmug.com/RidingRTW/p...SAM2719-X2.jpg |
