Tubular Rack with Top Box?
 

Hi

I'm looking a rack for my XT.

My ideal solution is a rack that bolts where grab handles go so i can remove when not using. A tubular rack that you can strap stuff to. Although sometimes for other kinds of load i'd like a top box instead. Can you fit a top box on a tubular rack? Or would i have to buy one of those racks thats like a flat plate?

Sorry if im being a noob never put a rack or anything on any bike before lol

You can fit a top box to any type of rack as long as you know the right end of a drill and know how to use a spanner - theres always a way mate.
You can attach the top box manufacturer's base plate to the rack if you want to shell out a few quid.

Yamaha do a rear rack which is made from tubular steel and replaces the rear grab handles. Its not the biggests rack in the world but is strong and allows a top box plate to be bolted on (had to make an adaptor plate from some steel for a givi plate) and then allows a top box to be added.

i have already seen that one, and 3 0r 4 others too.

but my question is can you get top box plates that you can add or remove from tubular racks when you need to, or do i have to buy one of those racks where the rack itself basically is a top box plate?

it would be useless for carrying anything without the top box attached.

i want a top box for some trips, but then other times i want to detach it and be left with a tubular rack that i can strap things like tents on to.

I have the Metal Mule rack fitted to 2 different bikes, their topbox transfers between the two very easily and nothing is attached to the rack as the fixings are all on the box. Downside is the cost...

i know what you mean forde, i would suggest my set up then where you have a tubular rack and a universal plate (including the home made conversion plate) for the top box which is pretty big in its area for carrying stuff/weight but as you say allows a top box to be fitted in seconds.

Ventura do good quality racks (tubular) at decent prices and their soft luggage is pretty good to, easily removed and designed for those who don't want to lug fitted luggage about all the time.
