International Driving Permits
One for the Moroccan veterans. According to the Post Office website an International Driving Permit is "recommended" for Morocco. Anyone who's been care to comment?
|
I believe it is recommended, but not required.
I have been twice without one. |
I know it's only 5 but what's its purpose? Is it just another way of getting cash out of you? What might happen if the police decided to stop you and you didn't have one?
|
I think the Moroccan police and customs have seen enough EU/UK licences now to know what they are... x
As Nick says, you can go to Morocco without an International Driving Permit with no problems... all they really care about is your vehicle registration document (at customs) and to a lesser extent, some sort of insurance policy... Have fun, Morocco rocks! Jx |
As above but I got one as I have the old style green paper licence, so it was handy as it had a photo on it. I am going again in October & will do the same as my old one looks like some old Egyptian paper! Have a great time.

Many countries don't like the old paper ones. |
Going down from Europe to Cape Town ... I was asked only in Nigeria about IDP so don't bother. Morocco is fine without it.
In the end if you're stopped by a cop that really wants something he will find something wrong with you, paper, bike, pillion even if you have a IDP. Cheers from Abuja, the Center of Unity. |
I don't think they're that important but for the sake of 5 and a trip to the post office I'd still get one.
I had one in Turkey and Russia, when we were stopped by the police in Turkey they were only interested in the standard EU licence. We didn't get stopped by the police in Russia so I can't really comment on their necessity, (despite all the stories of corruption and them being out to "get roubles" from foreign bikers). The need for immigration cards, or not, in Russia is another story. However, the IDPs do look like wartime identity papers so are always handy should you find yourself queuing for a bus, but don't forget not to reply in English. |
