Steering head bearings!!!!!

I have posted this in the Tenere section but thought i would put it here as well as i thought the bearings would be the same across the XT range.....

High guys, does anyone know the bearing number and a good (cheap) bearing place to get them from for the steering head bearings on a 09 XTZ? I have just been quoted 90 the pair from the dealer!!!!!!! http://www.xt660.com/images/fhbanner...cry%5B1%5D.gif

I paid 60 for Yamaha OE ones a month or so back. I don't have the numbers but I do still have the old bearings, or rather the bits :violent1: that I can measure....

Give me some time :icon_sunny:

Its these numbers you need to quote.

The first two numbers tell you what type of bearing - in this case (32) a taper roller bearing. The last two digits multiplied by 5 give the internal diameter of the bearing. Last letters give the seal type/ or any other information that is applicable - in this case can't remember, too long ago!

Wemoto stock Tenere parts,34.50 for a head bearing set.I've always been happy with their quality and service.

http://www.wemoto.com/bikes/Yamaha/X...8-09/#BEARINGS

I thought my head bearings were going but after removing them they looked okay but were lacking in grease.A regrease and refit and they feel fine again.

I did remove them when I first bought the bike and found little grease on them from the factory, slapped loads of waterproof grease in there but after 20000 miles most of it was gone again, those outer seals aren't the best designed.

In praise of the Tenere, I've done 23000 miles, a lot of wet greenlaning and 5 long distance trials and haven't had one bearing or cable fail yet.

Less than a tenner each...

Although by the time you add the VAT in, the Wemoto price is pretty good as well, and I'd probably go with them for the convenience.

One of those links is a Koyo bearing (the other I think was another Japanese brand, but I bet with a bit more digging you could find the Koyo one). I'd be almost certain that the OE ones are Koyo, the wheel bearings certainly are.

So you're not buying a 'pattern' bearing. You're buying the same bearing, just not in a Yamaha box :D

TBH with any chassis/wheel bearings, if you buy something with the same code, making sure it's got the same seals if applicable, from *any* well known brand (SKF, FAG/INA, NTN, Koyo), it will be fine.

+1 but if available and not tooooo costly would go for SKF every time.

Link posted by Uberthumper, clicked on and ordered one of each in the link above.

This morning, stripped bike down and found lower one full of water and totally shagged, upper one will be ok with a clean and regrease.
Just about to fit the new lower bearing, ****** the link was for two uppers, so i have got to go to a local place monday morning and get a new lower to put the bike back together.

My fault as i should have checked but just a heads up in case someone else needs to do this job in the future.

I replaced the head bearings in my XT660Z last year with ones from Wemoto. The old bearings were rusty and extremely difficult to get the outer section out.

Ahh, balls. Copy/paste screwup. Sorry about that.

theclowncrusty 25-07-11 12:31

No problem mate, i should have checked when ordering. have got a new lower this morning @ 20 which is not too bad as it looks to be a more substantial bearing and comes with the lower dust seal.

Mine was a real sod. In the end I used a fine cutting disc on the dremmel cutting almost through the cup. So as not to damage the shaft I didn't go all the way through.

Then I put in an old <hammer-able> screwdrive in the cut and gave it a medium tap, the cup croacked along the line of the cut. I twisted the same screwdrive and it was enough for the cup to come loose, and be removed.

dazzerrtw 25-07-11 17:17

Now we know of the premature ware of the head stock bearings maybe it would be best to strip and repack them with quality grease as soon as you get your bike.

If you cant do it yourself, then take your bike back to the dealers and get them to do it.

Niek 28-07-11 14:42

Bearings can be bought anywhere, but the bottom seal is not sold alone. You have to buy it from Yamaha with the bottom bearing (which is pricey).

scottnet 25-01-16 09:16

Just doing this now. From the ABR site I found a link to a tool that I plan to but to remove the lower race from the frame. As it it's really hard to get a grip on it. May be useful for others

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sealey-MS0...:coYAAOSw42JWC

I have also ordered the webmoto bearing Koyo but I am not sure if that lower has the seal ? any idea ?

Alls Balls bearing set

I got a set of bearings from a local Indy...Alls Balls...seen them on Ebay.

Now it comes with a everything...bearings, seals etc.

How tight does the lower bearing sit on the steering shaft? My shaft was rusted really badly...had to grind the old bearing off, clean the shaft to get rid of the rust. I had to bang the bearing so hard to get it on that I cracked it!!

How tight is the fit?

Petenz 01-02-16 06:41

they can be very tight.... best done with a press.....
when I replace the bottom bearing on a bike I press the stem out...
then back in... press the new brearing on....

Buzzlitebeer 01-02-16 07:03

Thanks Petenz

Off to the bikeshop to buy another set...will get the bikeshop to fit the bottom bearing then, rather than me getting it whacked to bits again.

I have a bit of a sticky point in the centre when I wiggle my steering from side to side, time to replace bearings?

https://youtu.be/m20GGcnIFxE

Quickly made this plate on lift jack to lift front wheel, don't have centre stand, yet. Works like a charm

scottnet 22-07-16 13:22

Nice stand !!! Yes sticky means you need to look at them , 90% of the time you can get away with a clean and grease. The main thing is you can feel any indentations in the cage then you need to replace them

Dual 20-11-16 12:20

Seems the bearings are shod, tightened them a bit as it felt too loose, now it's got a definite notch in the centre :(

Dual 22-11-16 17:50

Part number 7 was not there when I opened it, ??? plain washer

https://c1.staticflickr.com/6/5510/3...03198b83_b.jpg

tripletom 02-12-16 12:47

Part 7 is a rubber washer.

Just done mine. Had to weld a bar across the lower cup and drift out from the top. Massive PITA.
