Alright, quick question - got a new 2011 Ten, and it came with a tool kit. In it is a huuge allen key - what is this for? I can't for the life of me find anywhere it would fit :Itching_KFKKYE:

How big is huge?

Could be for the front axel and it would be a new addition if it were. Or,it could be smaller and for the fork pre-load. Depends on the size.

If it is for the front wheels, absolutely fantastic from Yamaha- seems like they do listen and attend to owners comments and requests....

Not for any of the wheels.

Being mechanically challenged I really have no clue how big it is. It's too big to fit any nut I can see, yet too small for the wheel.

I'll try to take a picture of it later.

Double check the front axle mate - as mentioned, a 14mm should have been in earlier tool kits but wasn't inluded.

Alternatively, seeing as you said you are mechanically challenged and youve refered to 'nuts' rather than bolts in your post - are you refering to the silver coloured sparkplug 'spanner'?

sounds like the one to adjust preload on the front forks.

Front fork adjustment sounds plausible. No wonder I didn't find them on my ABS then.

Well it's closer to a 14mm than previously. lol. I still can't believe there are no tools to remove a wheel in the tool kit . How dumb is that ?

There's none to remove the back wheel either....

or the rubber from the OE pegs

in fact, thinking about it, the toolkit is really aimed at road riders! So the person responsible for that job didn't really buy into the whole 'adventure' thing :087:

When I lost my 14mm hex key in Morocco I had one made up using an M12 (?) bolt which has the 14mm head with a small T-bar welded across the other end of the bolt to provide purchase.

Has anyone tried to use the spark plug socket supplied in the "factory toolkit".:eusa_wall:
Would anyone know where/part # for a socket to remove the spark plug. I know it's 18mm but any I've tried, one would need to throw in a lathe & turn the O/D down to fit in the narrow area in the head :hmh:

The one supplied does fit... but you need to cut it down to 65-70mm and drill a new through-hole to insert a screwdriver to turn it.

Trouble is the tool kit supplied is a generic Yamaha one and thus doesn't really suit any specific bike. Like the plug box spanner, it fits the spark plug and recess of the 660 motor, but not in the Tenere's application because the AIS gubbins gets in the way!

Hi my 2014 tenere came with a 10 mm allen key that did not fit anything, you need a long series 14 mm Allen key for the front Axel and a 22 mm spanner or socket for the rear Axel. My spark plug box spanner will undo the spark plug but you then need to unscrew it with you fingers if you leave the box spanner on you can't get the plug out.:laughing7:

I believe the tool kits are slightly different between earlier and later models as the production moved from Italy to Spain and then to France. They're still generic, utterly useless and the items within (which actually fit something) are made of cheese. France is of course famed for its cheese, so I'd guess the tool kits supplied from 2012 onwards are probably the best of the bunch! ;)

I don't have this problem, just got my XTZ and it ain't got one. Any tools I 'must have' when I make up a kit. I can work out most of it for myself so anything odd, I wouldn't think of.

I won't be going around the world and I've got recovery.

Oh, mine is a 2009.

All year models had no standard tools for removing the wheels. On a road bike - understandable. But not a dual purpose bike like the XTR/Zs. On the other hand, what bike's standard tool kit did you ever take into the bush without adding a load of other gadgets? I even carry a compressor on long trips!
